Google Search Console is showing some huge spikes in clicks in the performance report

Google Search Console's Performance report is showing sharp spikes in clicks, and the cause may be a bug. Search Engine Land has asked Google for a statement.

What it means for search and affiliate work

The Performance report is a primary feed for search traffic data. If the numbers are inflated by an error, content and bidding decisions rest on bad figures. For media buyers the risk is direct: a click spike can read as a jump in CTR and prompt a shift of budget.

Until Google confirms the cause, avoid drawing conclusions from the anomalous values. Cross-check against other sources, such as on-site analytics and server logs. Where a discrepancy holds, hold off on optimisation until the official explanation arrives.

What sets a bug apart from a real surge: compare the anomaly with previous weeks, check whether the click rise matches a rise in impressions, and look for a CTR change with no change to snippets.
