Bet365 has confirmed 340 job cuts — 3% of its global workforce. The operator will eliminate 300 positions at its Stoke-on-Trent headquarters, which currently employs 5,500 people, and another 40 roles in Malta and Gibraltar. The company cited rising tax burdens and competition as drivers.
Remote gaming duty climbed from 21% to 40% in April, affecting iGaming. A separate levy on sports betting, remote betting duty, will increase from 15% to 25% in April 2027, with UK horse racing exempt. "We operate in a competitive environment with growing regulatory and tax costs. We continually review operations to secure the long-term future of the business," a Bet365 representative said.
April's duty hike has already triggered a wave of cuts. Betfred and William Hill reduced headcount, evoke closed 200 shops in May, and Paddy Power flagged up to 100 stores at risk — threatening 400 jobs. Operators with retail estates offset tax increases by shuttering brick-and-mortar locations. Bet365 runs no physical betting shops, leaving payroll as the only cost lever.
The company will launch a voluntary redundancy programme. "Our colleagues are a priority. We understand their concern. Affected employees have been informed and we are fully supporting them through this process," the representative added.
