What zustand-patterns does

The skill activates on files matching **/store/**, *.store.* or *.zustand.*. It documents seven core patterns with TypeScript examples plus the anti-patterns: destructuring the whole store, keeping server state in Zustand, mutating state directly. It does not restate Zustand's own docs — it carries only the OrchestKit delta in references/ork-delta.md and the rules/ files.

Decisions sit in tables. Slices inside a single store beat multiple stores, because cross-slice access stays simple. Immer is recommended once nesting goes three levels deep; useShallow covers 2–5 related values. Middleware order is fixed: immer, then subscribeWithSelector, devtools, persist. Server state belongs to TanStack Query, so Zustand keeps client-only state.

Zustand 5.0.0 or newer is required, and the skill targets Claude 2.1.277+. It runs on haiku with Read, Write, Grep and Glob, and user-invocable: false means you cannot call it by hand. If your project still runs Zustand 4.x, these patterns will not match your API — update the library first.

What it helps with

  • split a large store into typed slices
  • stack middleware in the right order
  • cut re-renders with useShallow
  • persist state with schema migrations between versions
  • keep server state out of the client store

Example prompts for the agent

  • Create a typed Zustand store with two slices: cart and user
  • Check my store against Zustand anti-patterns and list what to rewrite
  • Set up persist with partialize and a migration from version 1 to 2

How to install zustand-patterns

1Skills CLI (Vercel)

npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill zustand-patterns -a claude-code

2Manually: put the files in place

~/.claude/skills/zustand-patterns/SKILL.md

Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/zustand-patterns/

Questions about zustand-patterns

How do I install zustand-patterns in Claude?

Run npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill zustand-patterns -a claude-code. The skill lands in ~/.claude/skills/zustand-patterns/SKILL.md.

What does zustand-patterns do?

It gives the agent a Zustand 5.x reference: slices, middleware, Immer, useShallow, persistence, selectors and devtools. It also ships a forbidden-patterns list and a production store template.

Which Zustand version does the skill support?

Zustand 5.0.0 and newer. On 4.x the patterns will not fit, since the API differs and migration goes through createWithEqualityFn.

# Zustand Patterns

Modern state management with Zustand 5.x - lightweight, TypeScript-first, no boilerplate.

## Overview

- Global state without Redux complexity
- Shared state across components without prop drilling
- Persisted state with localStorage/sessionStorage
- Computed/derived state with selectors
- State that needs middleware (logging, devtools, persistence)

## Upstream coverage (do not restate)

Zustand's own docs are the source for the mechanics. This skill carries only the OrchestKit delta
on top of them, in `references/ork-delta.md`, the `rules/` files, and the checklist.

## Quick Reference

```typescript
// ✅ Create typed store with double-call pattern
const useStore = create<State>()((set, get) => ({ ... }));
// ✅ Use selectors for all state access
const count = useStore((s) => s.count);
// ✅ Use useShallow for multiple values (Zustand 5.x)
const { a, b } = useStore(useShallow((s) => ({ a: s.a, b: s.b })));
// ✅ Middleware order: immer → subscribeWithSelector → devtools → persist
create(persist(devtools(immer((set) => ({ ... })))))
// ❌ Never destructure entire store
const store = useStore(); // Re-renders on ANY change
// ❌ Never store server state (use TanStack Query instead)
const useStore = create((set) => ({ users: [], fetchUsers: async () => ... }));
```

## Key Decisions

| Decision | Option A | Option B | Recommendation |
|----------|----------|----------|----------------|
| State structure | Single store | Multiple stores | **Slices in single store** - easier cross-slice access |
| Nested updates | Spread operator | Immer middleware | **Immer** for deeply nested state (3+ levels) |
| Persistence | Manual localStorage | persist middleware | **persist middleware** with partialize |
| Multiple values | Multiple selectors | useShallow | **useShallow** for 2-5 related values |
| Server state | Zustand | TanStack Query | **TanStack Query** - Zustand for client-only state |
| DevTools | Always on | Conditional | **Conditional** - `enabled: process.env.NODE_ENV === 'development'` |
