recap · takagoto — Claude Code skill: a short summary of your last session

Builds a brief recap of the previous lesson from progress files: what you covered, the main ideas, and what comes next. Handy when you come back to a course after a break.

What recap does

The skill reads four files under progress: the module tracker, quiz results, the learner's journal and the profile. From them it works out the latest lessons and quiz attempts, then prints a recap capped at 5–8 lines. The layout is fixed — what you worked on, two or three core ideas in plain words, and the next item in the track.

One suggested action follows. Mid-module it points to /lesson; right after a finished module, to /quiz; when scores were low, to /explain [weak topic]. Questions left in the journal get a short answer.

Everything comes from those files. With no progress data the skill says so and points to /start, so a bare project yields nothing. It is tied to the Rag Learning Academy course layout: strip away its files and the /lesson, /quiz, /explain commands, and the skill has nothing to work with.

What it helps with

  • recall where the previous study session ended
  • get a short restatement of a lesson's main ideas
  • see which lesson or quiz comes next
  • choose between reviewing theory and taking a quiz
  • get a quick answer to a question left in the journal

Example prompts for the agent

  • Recap what we covered last session
  • Summarise my last study session from the files in progress/
  • What should I do next in the course?

Questions about recap

How do I install recap in Claude Code?

Run npx skills add TakaGoto/rag-learning-academy --skill recap -a claude-code. The skill file lands at ~/.claude/skills/recap/SKILL.md.

What does recap do?

It reads your session history from progress/ and prints a short recap: the lesson you worked on, the key concepts and the next step. The whole thing fits on one screen.

Does recap work outside the Rag Learning Academy course?

The skill looks for progress/module-tracker.md, progress/quiz-results.md, progress/journal.md and progress/learner-profile.md. Without them it reports that no previous session was found.

# Recap: What You Learned Last Time

Give the learner a fast, useful summary of their most recent session so they can pick up where they left off.

## Step 1: Load Session History

Read the following files to reconstruct the last session:

- `progress/module-tracker.md` — find the most recently completed lessons (by date)
- `progress/quiz-results.md` — any quizzes taken recently
- `progress/journal.md` — any notes the learner wrote
- `progress/learner-profile.md` — current module and track

If no progress data exists, say: "No previous session found. Run `/start` to begin your journey."

## Step 2: Summarize Last Session

Keep it to 5-8 lines max. Cover:

1. **What you worked on** — which lesson(s), quiz, or challenge
2. **Key concepts** — the 2-3 main ideas from that session, in plain language
3. **Where you stopped** — what's next in the track

Format:

```
Last Session Recap
==================
You worked on: [lesson/quiz/challenge name]
Key concepts:
  - [concept 1 in one sentence]
  - [concept 2 in one sentence]
  - [concept 3 in one sentence]
Next up: [next incomplete lesson or suggested action]
```

## Step 3: Suggest Next Action

Based on where they left off, suggest one clear next step:

- If mid-module: `/lesson` to continue
- If they just finished a module: `/quiz` to test understanding
- If quiz scores were low: `/explain [weak topic]` to review
- If they wrote journal notes with questions: address the question briefly

Keep it short. The whole recap should fit in one screen.
