SymPy — Claude Code skill: symbolic math in Python
Skill for exact symbolic computation: algebra, differential equations, matrices, physics. When you need √2 exactly instead of 1.414, not numerical approximations.
npx skills add K-Dense-AI/scientific-agent-skills --skill sympy -a claude-codeWhat sympy does
SymPy solves symbolic math problems where exact answers matter. It works with algebraic expressions, takes derivatives and integrals, solves equations and systems, manipulates matrices, computes physics quantities. The skill guides you to the right solver (solveset for algebraic equations, dsolve for ODEs, linsolve for linear systems), how to add assumptions about variables (real, positive, integer), and how to convert formulas to code.
Requires Python 3.9+, SymPy 1.14.0, and mpmath 1.3.0. For plots and fast numerical work, add NumPy, SciPy, and Matplotlib. When you need to evaluate the same formula thousands of times, the skill recommends lambdify—convert a symbolic expression to a NumPy function for vectorised computation.
Includes seven reference guides: symbolic basics, matrices and linear algebra, mechanics and physics, advanced topics (geometry, number theory). Not for pure numerical work—use SciPy or NumPy instead.
What it helps with
- Find exact solution to an equation or system of equations
- Compute derivative, integral, or series expansion
- Simplify an algebraic expression with symbols
- Solve a differential equation
- Convert a formula to Python code or LaTeX
Example prompts for the agent
- Solve x² + 2x - 8 = 0 symbolically and show where to use it
- Find and simplify the derivative of sin(x) * exp(x)
- Solve the system: 2x + y = 5, x - y = 1

Questions about sympy
How do I install the SymPy skill in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add K-Dense-AI/scientific-agent-skills --skill sympy -a claude-code in your terminal, then open ~/.claude/skills/sympy/SKILL.md.
When should I use SymPy instead of NumPy?
Use SymPy for exact symbolic results and analytical solutions (√2, π, ∞). Use NumPy for numerical approximations and large datasets. If you need to evaluate one formula thousands of times, SymPy suggests converting the expression to a NumPy function with lambdify.
Which assumptions should I set for simplification?
Add assumptions (real, positive, integer, even, odd, and others) only when the problem requires them. Without assumptions, a variable is complex, and √x² won't simplify to x. Check whether an assumption is actually necessary, or your result will be wrong.
