What suggest-icon does

The skill takes one required argument: the concept, situation, noun or verb that needs an icon. It does not trust the model's memory for the answer. It resolves the Font Awesome version first, verifies the guessed icon exists, and searches for alternatives with fa search or the scripts under plugins/icons/skills/suggest-icon/.

When the project root has a .font-awesome.md file with a Kit ID, the search is scoped to that Kit's subset. That matters, because a Kit holds only part of the icon set and recommending an icon outside it gives you a broken result. Membership is confirmed with fa kit icon, and scoped search runs through fa search --kit-token <TOKEN>. The fa kit commands need auth (fa whoami or FA_API_TOKEN) and fa version 0.8.0 or newer.

Without fa on PATH the skill falls back to Python scripts and warns that suggestions can't be scoped to the Kit. Results come back as a table: icon name, families, license availability. Raw SVG markup is off the table — the skill points you to /add-icon instead.

What it helps with

  • find an icon for a concept or action
  • confirm an icon exists in a given Font Awesome version
  • scope icon picks to a configured Kit
  • surface alternatives when the first guess misses
  • check whether an icon is free or needs a subscription

Example prompts for the agent

  • Suggest an icon for the file upload section
  • I need an icon for "subscription" — check it against our version
  • Find an icon for a delete button and add it to the component

Questions about suggest-icon

How do I install suggest-icon in Claude?

Run npx skills add FortAwesome/fontawesome-agent-tools --skill suggest-icon -a claude-code. The skill lands at ~/.claude/skills/suggest-icon/SKILL.md.

What does suggest-icon do?

It suggests a Font Awesome icon for a given concept or situation, verifies it against the chosen version, and searches for alternatives. With a Kit configured, suggestions stay inside that Kit.

What do I need for Kit-aware suggestions?

The fa CLI at version 0.8.0 or newer plus auth via fa whoami or FA_API_TOKEN. Without fa the skill still runs on Python scripts, but it can't scope picks to the Kit.
