shopify-onboarding-dev — Codex skill: start building on Shopify
Walks a developer from nothing to a working Shopify setup: installs the CLI, wires up the AI toolkit, then asks what you want to build.
npx skills add openai/plugins --skill shopify-onboarding-dev -a codexWhat shopify-onboarding-dev does
The skill kicks in when you ask your agent to start building on Shopify — an app, a theme, a dev store, a partner account. It silently detects the client from system context (Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Gemini CLI) and only asks when it genuinely can't tell.
Next it runs shopify version. If the CLI is missing, it installs it through npm, pnpm, yarn or bun: npm install -g @shopify/cli@latest. On macOS without a Node package manager there's a Homebrew route. Then it installs the AI toolkit for the detected client and asks what you want to build, handing the request to a more specific skill such as shopify-admin or shopify-liquid.
When an install fails, the skill reports the exact error and stops. It won't rewrite or assemble install commands on its own. Unrecognized clients aren't supported at all. This one is for developers: questions about products, orders or customers in a live store are out of scope.
What it helps with
- get Shopify CLI installed and verified
- hook the AI toolkit into your editor
- create a dev store and a partner account
- scaffold an app or a theme
- move from onboarding to Admin API or Liquid work
Example prompts for the agent
- I want to start building on Shopify — what do I need to install?
- Help me scaffold a Shopify app from scratch
- Set up my environment for Shopify theme development
