What review-pr does

This skill runs a pull request review on its own. It pins the base and head commits, then walks the merge-base-to-head diff: entry points, callers, dependencies, migrations, caching, concurrency. Every candidate defect gets challenged before it is published, so only findings with a concrete trigger and a real consequence make it into the report.

It leans on git, gh and jq. A separate pass handles prior reviews and comments: duplicates collapse by root cause, fixed items are marked closed, disputed ones are rechecked against the pinned code. Its own earlier posts are recognized by the REVIEW_LOGIN value and the <!-- review-pr --> marker.

The skill leaves the index, branches and pinned revisions alone. It reads test code but will not run tests or CI logs unless you ask for that explicitly in the review request, and it never merges, dismisses reviews or edits PR metadata. When the checkout HEAD does not match the PR head, it stops and prints both SHAs; for GitHub Actions' synthetic merge checkout it suggests ref: ${{ github.event.pull_request.head.sha }} on actions/checkout.

What it helps with

  • catch defects in a pull request before merge
  • cover the whole merge-base-to-head diff, deletions and renames included
  • reconcile earlier reviewer comments with the current code
  • drop duplicate findings by root cause
  • get inline comments posted on the PR

Example prompts for the agent

  • Review the pull request in this repository and post inline findings
  • Reconcile your findings with earlier reviews and drop duplicates
  • Check that checkout HEAD matches the PR head, then walk the diff

Questions about review-pr

How do I install review-pr in Claude Code?

Run npx skills add dbpolito/skills --skill review-pr -a claude-code. The skill lands in ~/.claude/skills/review-pr/SKILL.md.

What does review-pr do?

It looks for defects a pull request introduces or worsens, reconciles them with existing review feedback, and publishes inline findings. Each candidate is challenged before it is reported.

Does the skill run tests or read CI logs?

No. It reads test code, but it will not execute tests or inspect CI logs unless the review request asks for that directly.
