What Python Backend Architecture Review does

The skill activates when you ask the agent to review a Python application's architecture or a system design document. It then works through sections: architectural style and service boundaries, database, API, security, scalability, observability.

Inside is a review framework with clarifying questions. The agent asks about expected scale, latency requirements, security and compliance needs, and team size, then analyses the diagram: component relationships, data flows, external dependencies, stack choices, deployment topology. Python specifics get their own treatment — ASGI versus WSGI, async/await, the GIL, multiprocessing against threading, ORM and drivers, background jobs.

Feedback comes as specific points rather than general impressions: where coupling is too tight, where the load bottleneck sits, which caching layers are missing, what the index and migration strategy looks like. The skill does not read your code on its own — it needs a document or a written description of the system, otherwise there is nothing to review. Security notes stay within what you describe: authentication mechanisms, authorization model, encryption, secrets handling.

What it helps with

  • spot scalability bottlenecks before they show up under load
  • check the database schema and index strategy
  • assess API security and the authorization model
  • review service boundaries and coupling between them
  • decide between ASGI and WSGI for a given workload

Example prompts for the agent

  • Review the architecture of my Python backend, here is the system description and component diagram
  • Check the API design and authorization model in this document
  • Look at the database schema and tell me where the index problems will be

Questions about Python Backend Architecture Review

How do I install Python Backend Architecture Review in Claude?

Use the skills CLI: npx skills add rknall/claude-skills --skill python-backend-architecture-review -a claude-code. The skill file lands at ~/.claude/skills/python-architecture-review/SKILL.md.

What does Python Backend Architecture Review do?

It reviews Python backend architecture across patterns and service boundaries, database, API, security, scalability and observability. You get feedback on specific spots instead of a general opinion.

What do I need for the skill to work?

An architecture document or at least a written description of the system. The skill asks clarifying questions about scale, latency and security requirements before giving feedback.
