planning · davila7 — Claude Code skill: phase plans that stick
Keeps markdown files for goals, findings and session progress so an agent doesn't drift off the task mid-run.
npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill ai-maestro/planningWhat planning does
The skill splits a job across three files in docs_dev/ or whatever $AIMAESTRO_PLANNING_DIR points to: task_plan.md holds goals, phases, decisions and errors, findings.md collects research, and progress.md is the session log with test results. You write to them as you go, not at the end.
Six rules and two protocols shape the behaviour. The two-action rule says save findings to findings.md after every two search or browse operations. The three-strike protocol walks a failing action up a ladder: diagnose the root cause and patch it, then try a different approach, then question your assumptions — and after the third strike hand the whole trail to the user. When the agent loses the thread, five questions pull it back: current phase, remaining phases, the goal, what was learned, what was done.
Nothing else is needed to run it. The wider AI Maestro platform adds memory search, docs search, graph queries and messaging between agents, and it installs separately. For a task that fits in a couple of tool calls the files just clutter the repo.
What it helps with
- hold the goal across a ten-step task
- carry findings from one agent session to the next
- record an error and its fix so it isn't repeated
- see which phase the work stopped at
- break a research project into tracked stages
Example prompts for the agent
- create a plan for refactoring the auth module
- set up
task_plan.mdand mark phase one done - log the findings in
findings.mdand continue from phase two

Questions about planning
How do I install planning in Claude?
With the templates CLI: npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill ai-maestro/planning. Or use npx skills add davila7/claude-code-templates --skill planning -a claude-code.
What does the planning skill do?
It creates and maintains markdown files for the plan, findings and progress, which keeps the agent on the goal during multi-step work.
Do I need the rest of AI Maestro for it to work?
No. The skill runs on its own. Memory search, docs search, graph queries and agent messaging come with the full AI Maestro platform.
