openduck-distributed-duckdb — Claude Code skill: setup and usage
Helps your agent set up OpenDuck, an open-source distributed DuckDB alternative with hybrid query routing and differential storage.
npx skills add reason-machines/trending-skills --skill openduck-distributed-duckdb -a claude-codeWhat openduck-distributed-duckdb does
This skill teaches your assistant how to deploy and query OpenDuck. The architecture distributes queries between a local DuckDB instance and remote workers. A Rust gateway splits the query plan, streaming tabular data through gRPC and Arrow IPC. For storage, Postgres tracks snapshots and metadata while an object store retains immutable data layers.
Compilation involves multiple toolchains. You need a stable Rust compiler, C++ build tools, and bison. The native DuckDB C++ extension compiles directly from the extensions/openduck directory via make. The repository also provides a Python package and a CLI binary to run workers and gateways.
DuckDB rejects external extensions by default. You must pass allow_unsigned_extensions = true when establishing a database connection, or the engine will refuse to load the compiled OpenDuck binary.
What it helps with
- compile the native OpenDuck C++ extension and Rust gateway
- execute split SQL joins between local files and remote tables
- connect to a remote OpenDuck instance using
ATTACHsyntax - spin up combined or separated gateway and worker nodes via CLI
Example prompts for the agent
- Help me build the openduck C++ extension and run the Rust backend
- Write a Python script that joins a local DuckDB table with a remote OpenDuck database
- Show me how to attach
openduck:mydbusing DuckDB CLI with an auth token

Questions about openduck-distributed-duckdb
How to install openduck-distributed-duckdb in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add reason-machines/trending-skills --skill openduck-distributed-duckdb -a claude-code in your terminal.
What does openduck-distributed-duckdb do?
It guides coding assistants in compiling OpenDuck components, running the Rust cluster, and issuing hybrid queries across local and cloud DuckDB tables.
Why is the allow_unsigned_extensions option mandatory?
DuckDB forbids unverified third-party binaries out of the box. Setting this parameter allows the client to load the custom openduck.duckdb_extension file.
