memory-reflect · basicmachines-co — Claude Code skill for reflecting on agent memory
The skill reviews what changed in Basic Memory and carries the durable parts into the notes where they belong. Run it daily or after a burst of work.
npx skills add basicmachines-co/basic-memory --skill memory-reflect -a claude-codeWhat memory-reflect does
This skill sits on top of a Basic Memory notes graph. It collects material added since the previous reflection, opens every changed note in full, and sorts what should still matter next month from what was routine. Decisions, lessons, preferences, owners and dated commitments survive; a moved file or a passing check does not.
The SKILL.md walks through four stages: gather, filter, file the results into topic notes, then log the reflection itself as a dated entry under reflections/. The next run reads that entry as its starting checkpoint. Edits to existing notes carry expected_checksum, so a file touched after it was read triggers a fresh read instead of a blind overwrite. Raw notes stay in place.
Every call goes through Basic Memory tools: bm_list, bm_project, bm_read, bm_search, bm_edit, bm_write. With no Basic Memory MCP server connected the skill has nothing to work with. The recent command reaches back one year at most, so if the last reflection is older, the run takes since="365d" and flags the uncovered period in its own report.
What it helps with
- turn meeting decisions into durable project notes
- date a fact and link it back to its source note
- close an outdated decision with a date range instead of deleting it
- sort lasting agreements from one-off details in a log
- log a reflection run so the next one can start from it
Example prompts for the agent
- Reflect on what changed in Basic Memory since the last run
- Consolidate the recent notes — keep what deserves to last
- Go through my latest edits and file the decisions into topic notes

Questions about memory-reflect
How do I install memory-reflect in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add basicmachines-co/basic-memory --skill memory-reflect -a claude-code, then look for ~/.claude/skills/memory-reflect/SKILL.md.
What does memory-reflect do?
It reads Basic Memory notes changed since the previous reflection and folds lasting facts into the topic notes. Each pass leaves a separate record in reflections/.
What does the skill need to work?
A connected Basic Memory MCP server, since every read and write goes through its bm_* tools. The expected_checksum check keeps an edit from overwriting a revision someone else made.
