What industry-research does

The skill lays out a phased method. First you pick sources: trade press, analyst reports, financial platforms, company databases. Then data collection runs through browser automation, and only after that comes analysis and synthesis. Four sector frameworks ship with it — consumer, technology, healthcare and finance — each with its own metrics and source list.

Page work goes through Playwright MCP. The skill tells the agent to screenshot a page first and read the image with the Read tool, so the report only contains what is actually visible. Output lands in outputs/<agent_name>/<customer_name>/, split into reports/, scripts/, raw/ and screenshots/. Reports follow a fixed template: summary, trends, market leaders, dynamics, recent developments, outlook, sources.

The catch is the browser layer. It depends on mcp__playwright_*, so without a Playwright MCP server wired up you get text-only analysis and no page scraping. Tools also list Read, Write and Bash, which means the skill writes files and runs code locally.

The frontmatter sets max_turns: 5 and max_budget: 0.10, and the model is inherited from the session. Worth knowing before a long run: five turns cover an overview, not a sweep through a dozen sources with verification.

What it helps with

  • map sector trends and separate them from one-off news
  • list the key players and where each one sits
  • pull market metrics from several sources into one report
  • verify figures against page screenshots instead of model recall
  • draft a sector outlook with source attribution

Example prompts for the agent

  • Research the consumer sector: trends, leaders, market dynamics for the latest period.
  • Build a fintech report using the skill template and save sources under raw/.
  • Scrape the analyst pages with Playwright and pull the market metrics into the report.

Questions about industry-research

How do I install industry-research in Claude?

Run npx skills add rkreddyp/investrecipes --skill industry-research -a claude-code. The skill file lands at ~/.claude/skills/industry_research/SKILL.md.

What does industry-research do?

It gives the agent a research method and sector frameworks: source selection, data collection, trend and company analysis, then a report built from a fixed template.

What does the skill need to run?

Page collection relies on a Playwright MCP server — the tools list mcp__playwright_*. Without it, only text-based analysis is left.
