imaging-data-commons — Claude Code skill: NCI cancer imaging data
Skill for searching and downloading public medical imaging data from the NCI Imaging Data Commons repository. Works with DICOM, CT, MR, PET and digital pathology without authentication for basic queries.
npx skills add K-Dense-AI/scientific-agent-skills --skill imaging-data-commons -a claude-codeWhat imaging-data-commons does
imaging-data-commons connects your agent to NCI's public repository of cancer imaging studies. Supports collection discovery, DICOM downloads, SQL queries on metadata, browser-based image viewing, and license verification. Three access paths: the IDC MCP server if already in the session, the local idc-index package for advanced data workflows, and a REST API for simple metadata queries without installation.
Basic operations—collection search, license checks, row counts—require no installation or keys. File downloads, pandas work, and visualization need idc-index version 0.12.5 or later. BigQuery and Google Healthcare API access require a Google account; DICOMweb is available through the public IDC proxy without credentials or through Google Cloud Healthcare with keys.
Datasets are licensed mostly CC-BY, some CC-NC. Check the license before use in research or commercial projects.
What it helps with
- find public CT, MR or PET images by cancer type and anatomical site
- download a batch of DICOM files from IDC for local analysis
- build a patient cohort using SQL queries on imaging metadata
- verify dataset licensing before use in a research study
- view a medical image in the browser without local DICOM viewer software
Example prompts for the agent
- Find all public lung CT collections in IDC and tell me how many studies are available
- Download the first 10 DICOM files from the prostate imaging dataset in Imaging Data Commons
- Query metadata for patients with skin melanoma and show the licensing for each file

Questions about imaging-data-commons
How do I install imaging-data-commons in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add K-Dense-AI/scientific-agent-skills --skill imaging-data-commons -a claude-code. Verify that ~/.claude/skills/imaging-data-commons/SKILL.md is created.
Do I need authentication to use this skill?
No for collection search, DICOM downloads, and viewing through the public IDC proxy. BigQuery and Google Healthcare API require a Google account with credentials configured.
What version of idc-index does the skill require?
Minimum 0.12.5. Run python scripts/check_version.py to check your version; it will print the exact install command if an update is needed.
