github-search — Claude Code skill: GitHub search over MCP

Searches GitHub code, repositories, issues and pull requests from inside the agent chat. Handy when you need a real implementation example or a known bug report without leaving the terminal.

What github-search does

This skill turns GitHub lookup into a single run. The agent calls scripts/mcp/github_search.py under uv run python -m runtime.harness and passes what to look for. Pick the target with --type — code, repos, issues or prs — and put the terms in --query. GitHub search operators work there, so language:python or label:critical narrow things down.

Two optional flags keep results close to home: --owner limits by account, --repo by repository name. The skill may only use Bash and Read, so it reads and searches but never writes to your checkout.

Setup comes first: you need a github entry in mcp_config.json and a GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN. Without that server the script has nothing to talk to, so configure the MCP side before adding the skill.

What it helps with

  • find working code samples across GitHub by language
  • track down an open issue describing a critical bug
  • locate a pull request that already solved a similar problem
  • pull repo details without opening a browser tab
  • keep a code search inside one organisation via --owner

Example prompts for the agent

  • Search GitHub for Python authentication code with --type code --query "authentication language:python".
  • Look up issues tagged critical in the anthropics organisation.
  • Show pull requests matching the database migration topic.
