gap — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
Measures the loaded-versus-fired context gap and spots noisy MCP tools. Helpful when auditing token usage across agent sessions.
npx skills add thousandflowers/skillreaper --skill gap -a claude-codeWhat gap does
The skill executes reap gap --agent and delivers the generated report directly into the conversation. It inspects what portion of the loaded context actually gets invoked by the agent. It also pinpoints MCP tools that return mostly noise.
The evidence window defaults to 30 days. You can change this window by passing --days N. When interpreting the outcome, the agent flags the worst category by token weight rather than raw item count.
Running this requires the reap executable at version 0.5.0 or higher inside your PATH. If the binary is missing or outdated, the skill prompts you to install or upgrade it through Homebrew, Go, or npm.
What it helps with
- measure the fraction of loaded context that is actually invoked
- identify MCP tools that produce excessive noise
- spot context categories with the highest token waste
- evaluate agent token reach over a custom day window
Example prompts for the agent
- Check how much of the loaded context is actually being used
- Show noisy MCP tools and context waste over the last 14 days using
--days 14 - Run a context gap audit to see which instructions earn their place

Questions about gap
How to install gap in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add thousandflowers/skillreaper --skill gap -a claude-code. You can also place the configuration file manually at ~/.claude/skills/gap/SKILL.md.
What does the gap skill do?
It runs reap to compare loaded context against actual agent invocations. The resulting report highlights noisy MCP integrations and identifies categories that consume tokens without being fired.
What are the prerequisites for gap?
It needs the reap binary at version 0.5.0 or later available in your PATH. If the CLI tool is missing, install it with npx skillreaper or brew install thousandflowers/tap/skillreaper.

--- description: Measure the loaded-versus-fired gap - what fraction of each category of loaded context is ever actually invoked, and which MCP tools return mostly noise. Use when asked how much of the context is earning its place, or which categories are worst. --- # skillreaper - loaded vs fired Run `reap gap --agent`, then paste its output verbatim. Do not reformat, re-order, summarise, truncate or re-align anything, and do not add a heading or a table of your own: the binary already renders the report, including its closing attribution line. ## Arguments Append any `$ARGUMENTS` tokens that begin with `-`; ignore anything else and say so. `--days N` sets the evidence window (default 30). ## If reap is not installed Decide with `command -v reap` and nothing else - never an absolute path, never a filesystem search: a copy found off `PATH` may be an older build, and silently using it hides a broken install. If that fails, print exactly this and nothing else: > `reap` is not installed. Run it once without installing anything: > > ```bash > npx skillreaper > ``` > > Or install it permanently: > > ```bash > brew install thousandflowers/tap/skillreaper > ``` > > ```bash > go install github.com/thousandflowers/skillreaper/cmd/reap@latest > ``` ## If reap is too old `reap gap --agent` needs reap ≥ 0.5.0. If it exits with `flag provided but not defined: -agent`, say the installed build is too old and give `brew upgrade skillreaper` (npm: `npm install -g skillreaper@latest`) - an upgrade, never the install block above, which they have already done. ## Reading it out After the pasted report you may add one or two sentences, no more. Name the worst category by token reach rather than by item count - a hundred unused 5-token agents matter less than three unused 300-token skills. `/skillreaper:reap` lists the specific items.
