fable-haiku — Claude Code skill: fable-mode discipline on Haiku

This skill runs the staged fable-mode loop on the cheap Haiku model. Useful for bulk mechanical work that still needs a real pass condition.

What fable-haiku does

The skill does no work itself. It hands the task to the @fable-worker-haiku subagent, whose prompt carries the staged loop and a stricter verification rule: a bare “unverified” label will not pass. When the worker lacks what it needs, it escalates instead of guessing.

Setup goes in order. First the skill checks that fable-worker-haiku exists among the available agent types; if it does not, it spawns a general-purpose Haiku agent and passes the rules from agents/fable-worker-haiku.md as they are. Then it spawns the worker through the Task tool with the task, the output paths and the pass condition spelled out. Independent sub-parts can go to separate workers and be merged, with a cap on how many run at once. Anything delivered without human review gets a second pass from @fable-verifier.

Before the result reaches you, the double-check skill runs on the finished deliverable. That gate is not optional. If the verifier already cold-checked the final document, double-check only handles the seam check. A task with one obvious approach and a single pass skips the loop entirely. Work that needs synthesis belongs on fable-sonnet instead.

What it helps with

  • push a large batch of repetitive edits through a cheap model
  • get output tied to a named check instead of a vague “looks done”
  • split independent parts across workers and merge the results
  • verify a finished document when no human will review it
  • stop the worker and hand a part upward when context is missing

Example prompts for the agent

  • Run fable on haiku: rename the variables under src/legacy/ from this list and state the pass condition
  • Use this skill on Haiku, fan out the independent modules to workers, no more than three at a time
  • Process this batch of files in deep work mode but cheap, and run double-check before handing it over

Questions about fable-haiku

How do I install fable-haiku in Claude Code?

Run npx skills add mrtooher/fable-mode --skill fable-haiku -a claude-code. The skill lands at ~/.claude/skills/fable-haiku/SKILL.md.

What does fable-haiku do?

It routes the task to the @fable-worker-haiku subagent, which carries the staged loop and the tightened verification rule. The skill itself only routes.

When should I not use this skill?

Tasks that need synthesis go to fable-sonnet. This one targets bulk mechanical work on Haiku.
