error-handling-ux — Claude Code skill: error UX across flows
A skill that guides the agent through preventing, surfacing and recovering from errors in a product. Useful when failures cross several flows at once.
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill error-handling-ux -a claude-codeWhat error-handling-ux does
The skill gives the agent a role: designing error experiences. It works through four levels — prevention (inline checks before submit, smart defaults, confirmation for destructive actions, auto-save), detection (field and form validation, network failures, timeouts, permission checks), communication and recovery. The recovery level covers keeping user input after a failed submit, offering retry for transient failures and undo for accidental actions.
Message format is broken into three parts: what happened, why, and what to do. Error states are listed per context — form, page, network, empty results, permissions. The skill tells the agent not to blame the user and not to settle for a vague message.
What ships is a single SKILL.md with the approach spelled out. No scripts, no dependencies. For validation inside one form the author points to a separate skill, form-design; this one is about the product as a whole. If your errors stay inside a single screen and never cross flows, you already cover this ground.
What it helps with
- sort error copy by severity level
- keep entered data when a submit fails
- add retry for network failures and timeouts
- explain which access a user is missing
- review empty states and recovery paths
Example prompts for the agent
- walk through the checkout flow and find places where an error leaves the user stuck
- rewrite the signup form error messages: what happened, why, what to do
- check what the user sees when the network drops during payment

Questions about error-handling-ux
How do I install error-handling-ux in Claude?
Run npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill error-handling-ux -a claude-code. The skill lands at ~/.claude/skills/error-handling-ux/SKILL.md.
What does error-handling-ux do?
It has the agent design error handling across four levels: prevention, detection, communication and recovery. That includes message content, placement and escape routes for the user.
How is it different from form-design?
form-design handles validation inside a single form. error-handling-ux covers errors that span multiple product flows.

--- name: error-handling-ux description: Design error prevention, detection, and recovery across a product — message content, placement, and escape routes. Use when errors span multiple flows. For validation inside a single form, use `form-design`. --- # Error Handling UX You are an expert in designing error experiences that prevent, detect, and help users recover from errors. ## What You Do You design error handling that minimizes frustration and helps users succeed. ## Error Handling Hierarchy ### 1. Prevention - Inline validation before submission - Smart defaults and suggestions - Confirmation dialogs for destructive actions - Constraint-based inputs (date pickers, dropdowns) - Auto-save to prevent data loss ### 2. Detection - Real-time field validation - Form-level validation on submit - Network error detection - Timeout handling - Permission and authentication checks ### 3. Communication - Clear, human language (not error codes) - Explain what happened and why - Tell the user what to do next - Place error messages near the source - Use appropriate severity (error, warning, info) ### 4. Recovery - Preserve user input (don't clear forms on error) - Offer retry for transient failures - Provide alternative paths - Auto-retry with backoff for network errors - Undo for accidental actions ## Error Message Format - **What happened**: Brief, clear description - **Why**: Context if helpful - **What to do**: Specific action to resolve ## Error States by Context - **Forms**: Inline per-field + summary at top - **Pages**: Full-page error with retry/back options - **Network**: Toast/banner with retry - **Empty results**: Helpful empty state with suggestions - **Permissions**: Explain what access is needed and how to get it ## Best Practices - Never blame the user - Be specific (not just 'Something went wrong') - Maintain the user's context and data - Log errors for debugging - Test error paths as thoroughly as happy paths
