domain-research — Claude Code skill: WHOIS lookup and domain marketplaces
This skill pulls WHOIS/RDAP records, searches marketplace listings and scores a domain before you buy it.
npx skills add OpenClaudia/openclaudia-skills --skill domain-research -a claude-codeWhat domain-research does
The skill turns the agent into a domain researcher. One call to https://mcp.domaindetails.com/lookup/{domain} returns the registrar, creation and expiry dates, nameservers, DNSSEC state and status codes. A second call to https://api.domaindetails.com/api/marketplace/search?domain={domain} checks listings on Sedo, Afternic, Atom, Dynadot, Namecheap, NameSilo and Unstoppable Domains.
Scoring comes next. Brand domains get judged on length, memorability, brandability, extension, history and SEO; content domains on keyword match, authority, backlink profile and history. A separate table splits factors into low and high value: length, extension, dictionary word, search volume, traffic, links, age, comparable sales.
No authentication is needed and the cap is 100 requests per minute. The SEO step is the exception: it reads a SemRush key from SEMRUSH_API_KEY, and without that variable the block is skipped. History checks go through the Wayback Machine, so a domain with spam or adult content behind it comes back flagged. That matters before money changes hands, not after. When the name is taken, the skill suggests patterns such as get{brand}.com or {brand}hq.com.
What it helps with
- find out who registered a domain and when it expires
- see whether a domain is listed for sale and at what price
- score a domain on length, extension and past use
- spot spam or adult history behind an old domain
- generate free alternatives when the name is taken
Example prompts for the agent

- **Status codes:** Domain status (clientTransferProhibited, etc.)
### Marketplace Listing Search
```bash
### Step 3: Check Domain History
- `web.archive.org/web/*/{domain}` — Past versions of the site
- Historical use, content type, any red flags
### Step 4: Check SEO Metrics (if SemRush available)
```bash
# Domain overview
curl -s "https://api.semrush.com/?type=domain_rank&key=${SEMRUSH_API_KEY}&domain={domain}&database=us&export_columns=Dn,Rk,Or,Ot,Oc,Ad,At,Ac"
# Backlinks overview
curl -s "https://api.semrush.com/?type=backlinks_overview&key=${SEMRUSH_API_KEY}&target={domain}&export_columns=total,domains_num,urls_num,ips_num,follows_num,nofollows_num"
```
### Step 5: Generate Alternatives
If the desired domain is taken, suggest alternatives:
**Patterns:**
## Recommendation
{Buy/Pass/Negotiate — with reasoning}
```
## Important Notes
- WHOIS data is increasingly privacy-protected. Limited registrant info is normal.
- Domain marketplace prices are often negotiable. Listed price is usually the starting point.
- Always check domain history on the Wayback Machine before purchasing. Spam/adult history can carry Google penalties.
- Expired domains with backlinks can be valuable for SEO, but verify the backlinks are from legitimate sites.
- .com is still king for brand trust, but .io (tech), .ai (AI), and .co (startups) are increasingly accepted.
