What convex-seed does

This skill guides agents in seeding Convex database tables using either an internalMutation function or the npx convex import command. When generating test fixtures, the agent writes a mutation that validates data against schema validators and executes it via npx convex run. For larger datasets, it shapes raw data to match schemas before running the import.

Seeding logic must remain idempotent. The workflow enforces using upserts or a clear-then-insert pattern so repeated executions do not create duplicate rows. After insertion, the agent verifies final row counts.

Never push secrets or personally identifiable information into shared deployments, as the instructions explicitly prohibit seeding sensitive data outside local setups.

What it helps with

  • insert sample rows into Convex tables using internalMutation
  • bulk import external datasets using npx convex import
  • make fixture seeding idempotent using clear-then-insert or upserts
  • validate inserted row counts against table schemas

Example prompts for the agent

  • Create an internalMutation to seed sample users into Convex and run it
  • Format data.json to match our schema and import it with npx convex import
  • Make the product table seed function idempotent and check row counts

Questions about convex-seed

How to install convex-seed in Claude Code?

Run npx skills add convex/agent-skills --skill convex-seed -a claude-code in your terminal. This registers the skill workflow for Claude Code.

What does convex-seed do?

It provides workflows for populating Convex tables with test fixtures via internalMutation or importing formatted data matching database validators.

How does convex-seed handle duplicate data?

It enforces idempotency by requiring mutations to perform upserts or clear tables before inserting, followed by row count verification.

# Seed / import data

Populate tables via an internalMutation seed function (re-runnable) or `npx convex import`, matching the schema.

## Workflow

1. For fixtures: write an internalMutation that inserts sample rows; run it with `npx convex run`.
2. For bulk import: shape the data to the schema and use `npx convex import`.
3. Make seeding idempotent (clear-then-insert or upsert) so re-running is safe.
4. Verify row counts.

## Rules

- Seed via internalMutation or convex import, matching validators.
- Make seeding idempotent.
- Never seed secrets/PII into a shared deployment.
