songsee · nousresearch — Claude Code skill: audio spectrograms and feature analysis
Generates spectrograms and multi-panel audio feature visualizations (mel, chroma, MFCC) via CLI. Useful for analyzing sound, comparing audio outputs, or documenting processing pipelines.
npx skills add NousResearch/hermes-agent --skill songsee -a claude-codeWhat songsee does
songsee takes an MP3 or WAV file and renders a spectrogram—or stacks multiple panels: mel-scaled spectrogram, pitch class distribution, harmonic/percussive separation, self-similarity matrix, loudness, tempogram, MFCC, and spectral flux. Each visualization type can run alone or combined into a single grid.
Requires Go: go install github.com/steipete/songsee/cmd/songsee@latest. For formats beyond WAV and MP3, ffmpeg is needed. You control the color palette (classic, magma, inferno, viridis, gray), dimensions, frequency range, and time slices via command-line flags.
Visualizations can be analyzed automatically with vision_analyze or inspected by eye. Handy for debugging audio synthesis, comparing model outputs, or documenting audio processing workflows.
What it helps with
- Generate a spectrogram from an MP3 and save it as PNG
- Visualize multiple audio features in one grid (mel, chroma, MFCC)
- Extract and visualize a time slice of an audio file
- Compare spectral characteristics of different audio outputs
- Customize color scheme and dimensions for visualization
Example prompts for the agent
- Generate a spectrogram from this MP3 and save it as PNG
- Show mel spectrogram, chroma, and MFCC in a single visualization
- Draw a spectrogram from 12.5 seconds for 8 seconds duration

Questions about songsee
How do I install songsee in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add NousResearch/hermes-agent --skill songsee -a claude-code, then check ~/.claude/skills/songsee/SKILL.md.
What does songsee do?
It generates spectrograms and multi-panel visualizations of audio features (mel, chroma, MFCC, loudness, tempogram, and more) from MP3 or WAV files via the command line.
Which audio formats does songsee support?
WAV and MP3 natively. Other formats require ffmpeg.

# songsee
Generate spectrograms and multi-panel audio feature visualizations from audio files.
## Prerequisites
Requires [Go](https://go.dev/doc/install):
```bash
go install github.com/steipete/songsee/cmd/songsee@latest
```
Optional: `ffmpeg` for formats beyond WAV/MP3.
## Quick Start
```bash
# Basic spectrogram
songsee track.mp3
# Save to specific file
songsee track.mp3 -o spectrogram.png
# Multi-panel visualization grid
songsee track.mp3 --viz spectrogram,mel,chroma,hpss,selfsim,loudness,tempogram,mfcc,flux
# Time slice (start at 12.5s, 8s duration)
songsee track.mp3 --start 12.5 --duration 8 -o slice.jpg
# From stdin
cat track.mp3 | songsee - --format png -o out.png
```
## Visualization Types
Use `--viz` with comma-separated values:
| Type | Description |
|------|-------------|
| `spectrogram` | Standard frequency spectrogram |
| `mel` | Mel-scaled spectrogram |
| `chroma` | Pitch class distribution |
| `hpss` | Harmonic/percussive separation |
| `selfsim` | Self-similarity matrix |
| `loudness` | Loudness over time |
| `tempogram` | Tempo estimation |
| `mfcc` | Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients |
| `flux` | Spectral flux (onset detection) |
Multiple `--viz` types render as a grid in a single image.
## Common Flags
| Flag | Description |
|------|-------------|
| `--viz` | Visualization types (comma-separated) |
| `--style` | Color palette: `classic`, `magma`, `inferno`, `viridis`, `gray` |
| `--width` / `--height` | Output image dimensions |
| `--window` / `--hop` | FFT window and hop size |
| `--min-freq` / `--max-freq` | Frequency range filter |
| `--start` / `--duration` | Time slice of the audio |
| `--format` | Output format: `jpg` or `png` |
| `-o` | Output file path |
## Notes
- WAV and MP3 are decoded natively; other formats require `ffmpeg`
- Output images can be inspected with `vision_analyze` for automated audio analysis
- Useful for comparing audio outputs, debugging synthesis, or documenting audio processing pipelines
