code-documentation-code-explain — Claude Code skill: break down
A skill that transforms tangled code into clear explanations with diagrams and step-by-step walkthroughs. Use it to understand unfamiliar code fast or prepare learning materials.
npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill code-documentation-code-explain -a claude-codeWhat code-documentation-code-explain does
The skill acts as a code mentor: reads algorithms, architecture, or patterns and explains structure and execution flow. It delivers a high-level summary, then drills into key parts—function calls, dependencies, complexity hotspots. Adds diagrams, pseudocode, or examples when they help.
It includes a checklist to verify the task fits (code explanation, learning materials, pattern analysis) or suggests an alternative. Limitations: static code analysis without execution; environment-specific validation and testing require separate review. If requirements or boundaries are unclear, the skill asks for clarification.
What it helps with
- Understand unfamiliar code faster than reading line by line
- Create learning material with step-by-step breakdown
- Spot bottlenecks and edge cases in an algorithm
- Explain system architecture to junior developers
Example prompts for the agent
- Explain how this recursive factorial algorithm works
- Break down this async queue code: structure, dependencies, potential errors
- Create a data flow diagram for this payment processing module

Questions about code-documentation-code-explain
How do I install code-documentation-code-explain in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill code-documentation-code-explain -a claude-code, then open ~/.claude/skills/code-documentation-code-explain/SKILL.md.
What does the code-documentation-code-explain skill do?
It explains complex code through step-by-step breakdowns, diagrams, and examples. Shows structure, function calls, dependencies, and edge cases.
Can the skill run code and verify how it behaves?
No, it performs static analysis. For runtime validation in production, you need separate testing and review.

# Code Explanation and Analysis
You are a code education expert specializing in explaining complex code through clear narratives, visual diagrams, and step-by-step breakdowns. Transform difficult concepts into understandable explanations for developers at all levels.
## Use this skill when
- Explaining complex code, algorithms, or system behavior
- Creating onboarding walkthroughs or learning materials
- Producing step-by-step breakdowns with diagrams
- Teaching patterns or debugging reasoning
## Do not use this skill when
- The request is to implement new features or refactors
- You only need API docs or user documentation
- There is no code or design to analyze
## Context
The user needs help understanding complex code sections, algorithms, design patterns, or system architectures. Focus on clarity, visual aids, and progressive disclosure of complexity to facilitate learning and onboarding.
## Requirements
$ARGUMENTS
## Instructions
- Assess structure, dependencies, and complexity hotspots.
- Explain the high-level flow, then drill into key components.
- Use diagrams, pseudocode, or examples when useful.
- Call out pitfalls, edge cases, and key terminology.
- If detailed examples are required, open `resources/implementation-playbook.md`.
## Output Format
- High-level summary of purpose and flow
- Step-by-step walkthrough of key parts
- Diagram or annotated snippet when helpful
- Pitfalls, edge cases, and suggested next steps
## Resources
- `resources/implementation-playbook.md` for detailed examples and templates.
## Limitations
- Use this skill only when the task clearly matches the scope described above.
- Do not treat the output as a substitute for environment-specific validation, testing, or expert review.
- Stop and ask for clarification if required inputs, permissions, safety boundaries, or success criteria are missing.
## Implementation limits
The playbook is a teaching scaffold: complexity, nesting, pattern, dependency and difficulty helpers are omitted, and template fields such as `{specific_use_in_code}` and `{code_analysis}` require evidence-based substitution. Unknown metrics must remain unknown. AST and regex matches suggest syntax or possible patterns; they do not establish behavior, runtime call targets, security, or a learner's knowledge gaps. Explain code statically unless separate execution is authorized in an isolated environment.
The recursion diagram covers factorial(3) only; the asynchronous fetch example simulates sleep and performs no HTTP request. Bound task counts and concurrency when adapting it. Timings are examples, not measured results. Mermaid identifiers and labels require escaping and stable generated IDs; call diagrams must handle external callees absent from the local function map. Do not render untrusted labels as active markup or claim complete call graphs from name matching.
