What 143-java-functional-exception-handling does

The skill scans Java code and rewrites spots where exceptions carry ordinary business flow. Optional<T> and VAVR Either<L,R> take over from NullPointerException and NotFoundException, while CompletableFuture<T> covers async chains. Error hierarchies come from sealed classes, records and enums, with exhaustive pattern matching on top.

A reference file, references/143-java-functional-exception-handling.md, holds good and bad examples for each area: chaining with flatMap/map/peek/peekLeft, checked versus unchecked discipline, causal chains when a throw is unavoidable. Logging splits by kind — warn and info for business failures, error for system ones.

Your Maven project has to be in a valid state first: run ./mvnw validate or mvn validate, and if that fails the skill stops there. Introducing Either means VAVR (io.vavr:vavr) and SLF4J must already be on the classpath. Finish with ./mvnw clean verify or mvn clean verify.

What it helps with

  • swap thrown exceptions for Optional and Either in business logic
  • model an error hierarchy with sealed classes and enums
  • chain fallible operations through flatMap
  • separate business-failure logging from system-failure logging
  • sort out checked and unchecked exception use in a codebase

Example prompts for the agent

  • Refactor error handling in OrderService.java to functional style with Optional and VAVR Either
  • Build a sealed-class hierarchy for payment errors with exhaustive matching
  • Run ./mvnw validate, then apply functional exception handling and verify the build

How to install 143-java-functional-exception-handling

1Skills CLI (Vercel)

Questions about 143-java-functional-exception-handling

How do I install 143-java-functional-exception-handling in Claude Code?

Run npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 143-java-functional-exception-handling -a claude-code. The skill lands in ~/.claude/skills/143-java-functional-exception-handling/SKILL.md.

What does 143-java-functional-exception-handling do?

It replaces exception overuse in Java with monadic error types: Optional, VAVR Either, CompletableFuture. It also builds error hierarchies from sealed classes, records and enums.

What does the skill need to run?

A Maven project that passes ./mvnw validate or mvn validate. If you introduce Either, VAVR (io.vavr:vavr) and SLF4J have to be present.

# Java Functional Exception handling Best Practices

Identify and apply functional exception handling best practices in Java to improve error clarity, maintainability, and performance by eliminating exception overuse in favour of monadic error types.

**What is covered in this Skill?**

- `Optional<T>` for nullable values over throwing `NullPointerException` or `NotFoundException`
- VAVR `Either<L,R>` for predictable business-logic failures
- `CompletableFuture<T>` for async error handling
- Sealed classes and records for rich error type hierarchies with exhaustive pattern matching
- Enum-based error types for simple failure cases
- Functional composition: `flatMap`/`map`/`peek`/`peekLeft` for chaining operations that can fail
- Structured logging: warn/info for business failures, error for system failures
- Checked vs unchecked exception discipline
- Exception chaining with full causal context when exceptions are unavoidable

**Scope:** The reference is organized by examples (good/bad code patterns) for each core area. Apply recommendations based on applicable examples.

## Constraints

Before applying any functional exception handling changes, ensure the project validates. When introducing Either types, confirm the VAVR dependency (io.vavr:vavr) and SLF4J are present.

- **MANDATORY**: Run `./mvnw validate` or `mvn validate` before applying any changes
- **SAFETY**: If validation fails, stop immediately — do not proceed until the project is in a valid state
- **DEPENDENCY**: When introducing `Either` types, confirm VAVR (`io.vavr:vavr`) and SLF4J are present
- **VERIFY**: Run `./mvnw clean verify` or `mvn clean verify` after applying improvements
- **BEFORE APPLYING**: Read the reference for detailed good/bad examples, constraints, and safeguards for each functional exception handling pattern

## When to use this skill

- Improve the code with Functional Exception Handling
- Apply Functional Exception Handling
- Refactor the code with Functional Exception Handling
- Model Java errors with Result or Either types
- Replace exception-heavy flows with functional error handling

## Workflow

1. **Validate project before functional-exception changes**

Run `./mvnw validate` or `mvn validate` and stop immediately if validation fails.

2. **Check required dependencies**

When introducing `Either`, confirm VAVR (`io.vavr:vavr`) and SLF4J are present before implementation.

3. **Read functional-exception reference and identify targets**

Read `references/143-java-functional-exception-handling.md` and identify places to replace exception-heavy control flow with monadic error types.

4. **Apply functional exception-handling refactorings**

Implement selected `Optional`/`Either`/async error patterns with structured logging and clear error contracts.

5. **Verify with full build**

Run `./mvnw clean verify` or `mvn clean verify` after applying improvements.
