What i-ching does

The plugin exposes two tools to Claude. cast_hexagram performs the coin toss, and interpret_reading returns the full Wilhelm-Baynes text: the judgment, the image, and line-by-line commentary. Changing lines are handled too, with the transformation reading included.

Two Rust binaries ship together: i-ching for the terminal and i-ching-mcp-server for MCP clients. Data files are embedded, so nothing external has to be fetched at runtime. Building them needs Rust 1.85.1 or later.

i-ching-mcp-server has to sit in your PATH. Without it the server never starts and Claude reports “1 MCP server failed”. Watch out if Rust came from Homebrew: cargo install still drops the binaries into ~/.cargo/bin, which is not always on the path. Run which i-ching-mcp-server to confirm.

The CLI takes a hexagram number, a Unicode character, six line values, or a change written as 32→34. Output is switched with --format and accepts brief, full, json, numbers, or motd.

What it helps with

  • get a three coins reading without leaving the editor
  • read the Wilhelm-Baynes commentary on a hexagram
  • work out the transformation when lines change
  • emit a hexagram as JSON for a script
  • diagnose a failed MCP server start in Claude

Example prompts for the agent

  • Please conduct an I Ching reading for me
  • What does hexagram 1 mean?
  • I need an augury about my travel preparations

Questions about i-ching

How do I install i-ching in Claude Code?

Add the marketplace first: /plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-community. Then install the plugin: /plugin install i-ching@claude-community.

What does i-ching do?

It casts a hexagram with the three coins method and returns the Wilhelm-Baynes interpretation, including changing line readings.

Why does the MCP server fail to start?

The i-ching-mcp-server binary is probably missing from PATH. Check with which i-ching-mcp-server and add ~/.cargo/bin to your shell configuration.

## Features

- **Three coins method** divination following traditional practices
- **Wilhelm-Baynes translation** with complete hexagram meanings, judgments, and line interpretations
- **Multiple interfaces**: CLI tool, MCP server for Goose, Claude Code, and other MCP-compatible clients
- **Flexible input formats**: hexagram numbers, Unicode characters, line numbers, or changing hexagram notation
- **Rich output formats**: brief, full interpretations, JSON, and MOTD formats
- **Changing line support** with transformation interpretations

## Quick Start

This tool provides three interfaces:

- **[CLI Tool](#cli-usage)** - Command-line divination and interpretation
- **[Goose Extension](#goose-extension-setup)** - MCP server for Goose AI assistant
- **[Claude Code Plugin](#claude-code-setup)** - Native plugin for Claude Code

All interfaces use the same binaries. Start with [Installation](#installation) below, then jump to your preferred interface.

## Installation

This section covers installing the binaries needed for **all** interfaces (CLI, Goose, and Claude Code).

### Prerequisites

- Rust 1.85.1 or later (for 2024 edition support)
- Cargo (included with Rust)

### Installing the Binaries

#### Option 1: From crates.io (recommended)
```bash
cargo install i-ching
```

#### Option 2: From source
```bash
git clone https://github.com/threemachines/i-ching.git
cd i-ching
cargo install --path .
```

#### Option 3: Build without installing (development)
```bash
git clone https://github.com/threemachines/i-ching.git
cd i-ching
cargo build --release
```

Binaries will be in `./target/release/` directory.

### Binaries Created

All installation methods create two binaries:
- `i-ching` - CLI tool
- `i-ching-mcp-server` - MCP server for Goose and Claude Code

The binaries include embedded data files, so they work anywhere without requiring external data files.

### Verify PATH Configuration

**Important for MCP usage (Goose & Claude Code)**: The `i-ching-mcp-server` binary must be in your PATH.

Check if `~/.cargo/bin` is in your PATH:

```bash
echo $PATH | grep -q "$HOME/.cargo/bin" && echo "✓ Cargo bin is in PATH" || echo "✗ Cargo bin is NOT in PATH"
```

If it's **not** in your PATH, add it to your shell configuration:

```bash
# For zsh (macOS default)
echo 'export PATH="$HOME/.cargo/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.zshrc
source ~/.zshrc
# For bash
echo 'export PATH="$HOME/.cargo/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.bash_profile
source ~/.bash_profile
```

**Note**: If you installed Rust via Homebrew (rather than rustup), `cargo install` still puts binaries in `~/.cargo/bin`, which may not be in your PATH by default.

## CLI Usage

### Basic Usage

```bash
# Random reading using three coins method
i-ching
# Get help
i-ching --help
```

### Input Formats

The CLI supports multiple input formats via the `--input` flag:

```bash
# Hexagram number (1-64)
i-ching --input 1
# Unicode hexagram character
i-ching --input ䷀
# Line numbers (6,7,8,9 format)
i-ching --input "7,8,9,6,7,8"
# Changing hexagram notation
i-ching --input "32→34"
i-ching --input "32->34"
i-ching --input "䷟→䷡"
```

### Output Formats

Control output format with the `--format` flag:

```bash
# Brief format (default for quick reference)
i-ching --format brief --input 1
# Output: ䷀ 1 Initiating
# Full format with complete interpretations
i-ching --format full --input 1
# JSON format for programmatic use
i-ching --format json --input 1
# Numbers only (traditional line values)
i-ching --format numbers --input 1
# Output: [8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8]
# MOTD format (all caps, for system messages)
i-ching --format motd --input 1
# Output: ䷀ 1 INITIATING
```

## Goose Extension Setup

**Prerequisites**: Complete [Installation](#installation) above first.

### Enable in Goose

1. Open Goose Desktop
2. Go to **Extensions** (top-level menu item)
3. Click **Add Custom Extension**
4. Fill in the extension details:
   - **ID**: `i-ching` (or your preferred identifier)
   - **Name**: `I Ching Divination`
   - **Description**: `I Ching divination readings with Wilhelm-Baynes translation`
   - **Type**: `STDIO`
   - **Command**: `i-ching-mcp-server`

5. Click **Save** to add the extension
6. Enable the extension by toggling it on in the Extensions list

### Using in Goose

If the extension is enabled, Goose should be able to find and use it. The phrase "conduct a divination" or the keywords "augur" and "auspicious" seem to be enough in Claude models, while GPT seems to need you to more specifically namedrop the I Ching. (I would love more anecdata on how it works with different models - please open an issue or a PR modifying this README with your experiences.)

## Claude Code Setup

**Prerequisites**: Complete [Installation](#installation) above first, including the PATH verification step.

This repository includes a Claude Code plugin configuration (`.claude-plugin/` and `.mcp.json`) that enables I Ching divination directly in Claude Code.

### Load the Plugin

Start Claude Code with the plugin directory flag:

```bash
claude --plugin-dir /path/to/i-ching
```

Or, if you cloned this repo to your home directory:

```bash
claude --plugin-dir ~/i-ching
```

### Grant Permissions

On first use, Claude Code will ask for permission to:
1. Load the plugin
2. Use the MCP server tools (shown with a `plugin:i-ching:i-ching` prefix)

This is normal security behavior. Grant both permissions to enable divination.

### Using with Claude Code

Once loaded, Claude Code can perform I Ching divinations. You can:
- Ask for divination: "Please conduct an I Ching reading for me"
- Request specific interpretations: "What does hexagram 1 mean?"
- Use traditional language: "I need an augury about my travel preparations"

The AI will automatically use the `cast_hexagram` tool to generate readings and `interpret_reading` to provide the complete Wilhelm-Baynes text and interpretation.

### Troubleshooting

**MCP server failed to start**

If you see "1 MCP server failed" in Claude Code:

1. Verify the binary is in your PATH (see [Installation - Verify PATH Configuration](#verify-path-configuration)):
   ```bash
   which i-ching-mcp-server
   ```

   If this returns "not found", you need to add `~/.cargo/bin` to your PATH.

2. Verify the binary was installed:
   ```bash
   ls -la ~/.cargo/bin/i-ching-mcp-server
   ```

3. Check Claude Code debug logs:
   ```bash
   tail -100 ~/.claude/debug/latest | grep -i "i-ching\|mcp"
   ```

**Plugin not loading**

Make sure you're using the `--plugin-dir` flag when starting Claude Code and pointing it to the directory containing `.claude-plugin/plugin.json`.

## MCP Server Usage

The MCP server can be used directly with any MCP-compatible client:

```bash
./target/release/i-ching-mcp-server
```

### Available Tools

#### `cast_hexagram`
- **Purpose**: Cast a new I Ching reading
- **Parameters**:
  - `lines` (optional): Array of 6 line values [6,7,8,9] to specify exact reading
  - `method` (optional): Divination method (currently only "coins" supported)
- **Returns**: Complete reading with hexagram details and interpretations

#### `interpret_reading`
- **Purpose**: Get detailed interpretation of a hexagram
- **Parameters**:
  - `hexagram`: Primary hexagram number (1-64)
  - `changing_lines` (optional): Array of changing line positions [1-6]
  - `transformed_hexagram` (optional): Transformed hexagram number
- **Returns**: Detailed interpretation including meanings, judgments, and line interpretations

## Divination Method

This tool uses the **three coins method** for divination, which has been widely used since the Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE). Each line is determined by tossing three coins:

- **3 heads (HHH)**: Old Yang (9) - changing line
- **2 heads, 1 tail**: Young Yin (8) - stable line
- **1 head, 2 tails**: Young Yang (7) - stable line
- **3 tails (TTT)**: Old Yin (6) - changing line

### On Yarrow Stalks

I chose to not support yarrow-stalk readings for several reasons:

* The separation of the stalks could be emulated with a probability curve, but I don't have any data I trust about how to calibrate that curve.
* The separation is a volitional act that presents some philosophical challenges for automating. I think there's an argument that, as the augur, Goose could "choose" how to divide the stalks by seeding the RNG, but this seems sketchy and would still need the abovementioned probability curve.
* Because this is written in Rust, I have some concerns that compiler optimizations could disrupt the form of the rites. For example, although the code could represent starting with 50 stalks and removing one at the beginning of the casting, the compiler might simplify this to simply starting with 49 stalks, which would be unacceptable.

Future versions _could_ allow for an MCP user to conduct their own reading and merely input the numeric results for AI interpretation, if there's demand.

## Data Source

This project uses the Wilhelm-Baynes translation of the I Ching, which is considered one of the most authoritative English translations. The data includes:

- **64 hexagrams** with names, Chinese characters, and pinyin
- **Judgments** with full commentary
- **Images** with interpretations
- **Line interpretations** for all 384 individual lines
- **Trigram information** and relationships

## Acknowledgements

Lovingly vibecoded in Goose with claude-4-sonnet.

This project would not have been possible without [adamblvck's dataset of the Wilhelm-Baynes](https://github.com/adamblvck/iching-wilhelm-dataset) text of the _I Ching_, and of course thanks are also due to Richard Wilhelm and Cary F. Baynes for producing their translation.

Special thanks to John Minford, whose _I Ching_ translation I quite like, and which provided invaluable guidance on correctly enacting the _rites_. (Although I acknowledge his objection to digital methods.)

This project was originally inspired by [a skeet from Hazel Weakly](https://bsky.app/profile/hazelweakly.me/post/3lulqskpatk2x).
