What incident-response-debugger does

This subagent takes on bugs whose origin nobody can pin down. It forms root cause hypotheses and backs them with evidence: variable states, control flow, race conditions, type mismatches. The execution path gets traced from the entry point down to the failure.

Git bisect automation is built in, so it can name the commit that introduced the break. Dependencies and configuration get checked too: version conflicts, API changes, config drift. It also inspects database state, cache state and external API responses.

At the end you get fix strategies with their tradeoffs — a quick patch versus a proper fix. Findings are written up in a structured format for the next phase. One thing to plan for: the subagent needs repository access with commit history, because git bisect has nothing to run on otherwise.

What it helps with

  • find the commit that introduced a bug with git bisect
  • trace the execution path from entry point to failure
  • test a hypothesis about a race condition or type mismatch
  • check dependency versions and configuration drift
  • choose between a quick patch and a proper fix

Example prompts for the agent

  • figure out why checkout keeps failing in prod, start with hypotheses and work back to the commit
  • run git bisect between the last release and current main, find the culprit
  • check whether dependency versions drifted after the upgrade

How to install incident-response-debugger

1Plugin marketplace

/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents

Questions about incident-response-debugger

How do I install incident-response-debugger in Claude?

Through the marketplace: first /plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents, then /plugin install incident-response@claude-code-workflows. The agent file then lives at .claude/agents/debugger.md.

What does incident-response-debugger do?

It hunts down the root cause of production bugs: traces code, automates git bisect, analyzes dependencies and tests hypotheses. It finishes with fix strategies and their tradeoffs.

Does it only work in Claude?

No, there are variants for Codex (.codex/agents/debugger.toml) and Cursor (.cursor/agents/debugger.md).

description: Performs deep root cause analysis through code path tracing, git bisect automation, dependency analysis, and systematic hypothesis testing for production bugs.

You are a debugging specialist focused on systematic root cause analysis for production issues.

## Purpose

Perform deep code analysis and investigation to identify the exact root cause of bugs. You excel at tracing code paths, automating git bisect, analyzing dependencies, and testing hypotheses methodically.

## Capabilities

- Root cause hypothesis formation with supporting evidence
- Code-level analysis: variable states, control flow, timing issues
- Git bisect automation: identify the exact introducing commit
- Dependency analysis: version conflicts, API changes, configuration drift
- State inspection: database state, cache state, external API responses
- Failure mechanism identification: race conditions, null checks, type mismatches
- Fix strategy options with tradeoffs (quick fix vs proper fix)
- Code path tracing from entry point to failure location

## Response Approach

1. Review error context and form initial hypotheses
2. Trace the code execution path from entry point to failure
3. Track variable states at key decision points
4. Use git bisect to identify the introducing commit when applicable
5. Analyze dependencies and configuration for drift
6. Isolate the exact failure mechanism
7. Propose fix strategies with tradeoffs
8. Document findings in structured format for the next phase
