Nebraska petition pushes referendum closer to decide on online sports betting launch in 2026

Nebraska's Secretary of State has confirmed that two petitions to legalise online sports betting have gathered enough valid signatures to appear on the November 2026 general election ballot.

The first petition, a constitutional amendment authorising online sports wagering, collected at least 138,473 valid signatures. To qualify, organisers needed 10 per cent of the state's registered voters and at least 5 per cent in 38 counties; they cleared the threshold in 64 counties. The second petition, a statutory initiative regulating online sports betting, collected at least 96,918 signatures against a requirement of 7 per cent of registered voters and 5 per cent in 38 counties; organisers met the mark in 55 counties.

Signature verification was halted once the 110 per cent threshold was reached, a procedure set out in state law. The Secretary of State's office will hold public hearings on both initiatives in each of Nebraska's three congressional districts and prepare a voter information pamphlet. Hearing dates will be announced later.

Final ballot certification is scheduled for 11 September 2026. By that date, all petitions, including two other constitutional initiatives currently under review, will be processed and results announced.

Nebraska remains one of the few US states where online sports betting is still prohibited. If both measures pass, the state will have a constitutional basis for launching the market and a regulatory framework in place.
