## What it does

The skill covers the whole `build.zig` file. Your agent gets patterns for `b.addExecutable`, static and shared libraries, and the `run` and `test` steps. Mixing in C is handled too: `addCSourceFile`, `addCSourceFiles`, include paths and `linkSystemLibrary` all come with examples.

Build-time options get their own section. You declare them with `b.option` for bool, enum and integer types, then pass them into Zig code through `b.addOptions` and `@import("build_options")`. Package dependencies live in `build.zig.zon` — name, version, `minimum_zig_version`, URLs and hashes. Zig prints a hash when one is missing, and you paste it back into the manifest.

Modules via `b.addModule` and custom steps are covered as well, including running an external command with `addSystemCommand` before the build. One catch: you need the Zig compiler installed, and the C examples link libc with `linkLibC()`. A single-file project with no `build.zig` gains nothing here — the same collection ships a separate compiler skill for that.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill zig-build-system -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/zig-build-system/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/zig-build-system/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill zig-build-system -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/zig-build-system/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill zig-build-system -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/zig-build-system/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills zig-build-system
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/zig-build-system/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill zig-build-system -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --path skills/zig/zig-build-system
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/zig-build-system/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill zig-build-system -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- write a `build.zig` from scratch for a multi-file project
- add C sources and system libraries to a Zig build
- declare build options and pass them into code as constants
- set up a `zig build test` step for unit tests
- pull in a package dependency via `build.zig.zon`

## Example prompts
- Write a `build.zig` for a project with `src/main.zig` and tests
- Add `src/legacy.c` to the build and link libc
- How do I declare a `backend` option with `b.option` and use it in code?

# Zig Build System

## Purpose

Guide agents through writing `build.zig` files: executables, libraries, C source integration, build options, test configuration, and `build.zig.zon` package manifests.

## Triggers

- "How do I set up a build.zig file?"
- "How do I add a C library to a Zig project?"
- "How do I define build-time options in Zig?"
- "How do I run Zig tests with zig build test?"
- "What is build.zig.zon and how do I use it?"
- "How do I add a Zig package dependency?"

## Workflow

### 1. Project initialization

```bash
# Initialize a new project
mkdir myproject && cd myproject
zig init          # creates src/main.zig and build.zig
# Build
zig build
# Run
zig build run
# Test
zig build test
```

### 2. build.zig structure

```zig
const std = @import("std");
pub fn build(b: *std.Build) void {
    // Standard options (--optimize, --target)
    const optimize = b.standardOptimizeOption(.{});
    const target = b.standardTargetOptions(.{});
    // Executable
    const exe = b.addExecutable(.{
        .name = "myapp",
        .root_source_file = b.path("src/main.zig"),
        .target = target,
        .optimize = optimize,
    });
    // Install step (zig build → copies to zig-out/bin/)
    b.installArtifact(exe);
    // Run step (zig build run)
    const run_cmd = b.addRunArtifact(exe);
    run_cmd.step.dependOn(b.getInstallStep());
    if (b.args) |args| {
        run_cmd.addArgs(args);
    }
    const run_step = b.step("run", "Run the app");
    run_step.dependOn(&run_cmd.step);
    // Test step (zig build test)
    const unit_tests = b.addTest(.{
        .root_source_file = b.path("src/main.zig"),
        .target = target,
        .optimize = optimize,
    });
    const run_unit_tests = b.addRunArtifact(unit_tests);
    const test_step = b.step("test", "Run unit tests");
    test_step.dependOn(&run_unit_tests.step);
}
```

### 3. Libraries

```zig
// Static library
const lib = b.addStaticLibrary(.{
    .name = "mylib",
    .root_source_file = b.path("src/mylib.zig"),
    .target = target,
    .optimize = optimize,
});
b.installArtifact(lib);
// Shared library
const shared_lib = b.addSharedLibrary(.{
