## What it does

The skill kicks in when you report an error, describe odd behavior, or ask for help debugging. The agent works in phases: first it pins down reproduction steps and the expected result, then gathers context from `git log`, logs and environment variables, then traces the stack and narrows scope by halving the code.

Root-cause analysis is grouped by category: null and undefined, type errors, async races, stale state, network, environment differences, memory leaks. Each one comes with symptoms and what to check. Hypotheses get validated by a test rather than by eye, and the fix ends with a regression test.

Ready-made commands cover JavaScript, Python and Go: `NODE_DEBUG=* node app.js`, `python -m pdb script.py`, `go run -race main.go`. A script, `scripts/debug_report.py`, builds a report from an error name. The skill asks for `Read`, `Write`, `Edit`, `Bash`, `Grep` and `Glob` — without write and shell access it can neither add logging nor run the test it just wrote.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zhaono1/agent-playbook --skill debugger -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/debugger/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/debugger/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zhaono1/agent-playbook --skill debugger -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/debugger/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zhaono1/agent-playbook --skill debugger -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/debugger/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install zhaono1/agent-playbook debugger
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/debugger/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zhaono1/agent-playbook --skill debugger -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/zhaono1/agent-playbook --path skills/debugger
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/debugger/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zhaono1/agent-playbook --skill debugger -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/zhaono1/agent-playbook/tree/HEAD/skills/debugger/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- reproduce a bug step by step and record expected behavior
- narrow the search area by commenting out half the code
- tell an async race apart from stale state
- generate a markdown report from an error message
- add a regression test after the fix

## Example prompts
- help me debug this: it fails in prod but works locally
- here's the stack trace, find the root cause
- generate debug-report.md for this error

# Debugger

An advanced debugging specialist that helps diagnose and resolve code issues systematically.

## When This Skill Activates

Activates when you:
- Report an error or bug
- Mention "debug this" or "help debug"
- Describe unexpected behavior
- Ask why something isn't working

## Debugging Process

### Phase 1: Understand the Problem

1. **Reproduce the issue**
   - What are the exact steps to reproduce?
   - What is the expected behavior?
   - What is the actual behavior?
   - What error messages appear?

2. **Gather context**
   ```bash
   # Check recent changes
   git log --oneline -10
   # Check error logs
   tail -f logs/error.log
   # Check environment
   env | grep -i debug
   ```

### Phase 2: Isolate the Issue

1. **Locate the error source**
   - Stack trace analysis
   - Error code lookup
   - Log correlation

2. **Narrow down scope**
   - Binary search (comment out half)
   - Minimize reproduction case
   - Identify affected components

### Phase 3: Analyze the Root Cause

#### Common Error Categories

| Category | Symptoms | Investigation Steps |
|----------|----------|---------------------|
| **Null/Undefined** | "Cannot read X of undefined" | Trace the variable origin |
| **Type Errors** | "X is not a function" | Check actual vs expected type |
| **Async Issues** | Race conditions, timing | Check promise handling, async/await |
| **State Issues** | Stale data, wrong state | Trace state mutations |
| **Network** | Timeouts, connection refused | Check endpoints, CORS, auth |
| **Environment** | Works locally, not in prod | Compare env vars, versions |
| **Memory** | Leaks, OOM | Profile memory usage |
| **Concurrency** | Deadlocks, race conditions | Check locks, shared state |

### Phase 4: Form Hypotheses

For each potential cause:
1. Form a hypothesis
2. Create a test to validate
3. Run the test
4. Confirm or reject

### Phase 5: Fix and Verify

1. **Implement the fix**
2. **Add logging if needed**
3. **Test the fix**
4. **Add regression test**

## Debugging Commands

### General Debugging

```bash
# Find recently modified files
find . -type f -mtime -1 -name "*.js" -o -name "*.ts" -o -name "*.py"
# Grep for error patterns
grep -r "ERROR\|FATAL\|Exception" logs/
# Search for suspicious patterns
grep -r "TODO\|FIXME\|XXX" src/
# Check for console.log left in code
grep -r "console\.log\|debugger" src/
```

### Language-Specific

**JavaScript/TypeScript:**
```bash
# Run with debug output
