# secure-code-review

This skill walks your code through all ten OWASP Top 10 categories and returns a report with vulnerable examples and working fixes. Useful before a release or when reviewing unfamiliar code.

## What it does

The skill runs as a checklist. It goes through A01–A10 in order and shows what to look for at each step. Every item in the report carries a vulnerability description, a typical vulnerable snippet, inspection checkpoints and a remediation example. Findings get a severity label: RED for directly exploitable, YELLOW for issues that need specific conditions, GREEN for defense-in-depth gaps. A prioritized fix list closes the report.

The author's core principle: prefer false positives over missed true positives. That is why all ten categories appear in the output, with clean ones marked as passed. Findings point at exact spots as `file:line_number`, and fixes come as actual code rather than prose.

The checklist targets web applications. It covers SQL injection, XSS, SSRF, broken access control, cryptographic failures, unsafe deserialization and plaintext passwords in logs. On a non-web project some categories will have nothing to bite on, so it is worth checking which ones apply to your stack at all.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill secure-code-review -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/secure-code-review/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/secure-code-review/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill secure-code-review -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/secure-code-review/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill secure-code-review -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/secure-code-review/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install zebbern/claude-code-guide secure-code-review
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/secure-code-review/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill secure-code-review -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/zebbern/claude-code-guide --path skills/secure-code-review
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/secure-code-review/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill secure-code-review -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- check endpoints for IDOR and missing authorization
- spot string-concatenated SQL queries
- catch `shell=True` and `os.system()` calls with user input
- verify password hashing and find hardcoded secrets
- run `pip audit` and `npm audit` over dependencies

## Example prompts
- Check this code for SQL injection risks
- Run a full OWASP Top 10 review on this project
- Does this API endpoint have any SSRF vulnerabilities?

# OWASP Top 10 Code Security Review Checklist

A systematic security review based on the OWASP Top 10 (2021) standard. Each item includes: vulnerability description, typical vulnerable code, inspection checkpoints, and remediation examples. Designed for security-focused code review of web applications.

## Usage

Provide the code files or code snippets to review, and specify which OWASP categories to check (or request a full review) to receive an item-by-item audit report.

**Example prompts:**
- "Check this code for SQL injection risks"
- "Run a full OWASP Top 10 security review on this project"
- "Does this API endpoint have any SSRF vulnerabilities?"

---

## Quick Reference

| ID | Category | Key Check |
|----|----------|-----------|
| A01 | Broken Access Control | Does every endpoint verify the current user's identity? Can users access others' data by changing IDs? |
| A02 | Cryptographic Failures | Are passwords hashed with bcrypt/argon2? Are secrets hardcoded? |
| A03 | Injection | String-concatenated SQL? `shell=True`? Unescaped template output? |
| A04 | Insecure Design | Is rate limiting in place? Can critical workflows be bypassed? |
| A05 | Security Misconfiguration | DEBUG enabled? Stack traces in error pages? Default credentials? |
| A06 | Vulnerable Components | Any CVEs from `pip audit` / `npm audit`? |
| A07 | Authentication Failures | Is JWT signature verified? Can tokens be revoked? Is MFA available? |
| A08 | Integrity Failures | Any `pickle.loads` deserializing untrusted data? |
| A09 | Logging & Monitoring Failures | Are plaintext passwords in logs? Are failed logins recorded? |
| A10 | SSRF | Are user-supplied URLs filtered against internal IPs? |

## Review Process SOP

**Core principle: prefer false positives over missed true positives.**

1. **Define scope** — Identify the files, modules, or code snippets to review
2. **Full coverage check** — Scan through A01-A10 sequentially. **Every item must appear in the report** (mark items with no findings as pass). The default behavior is to only report issues found — this process requires full coverage to ensure nothing is missed
