# youtube-shorts

Drafts vertical video scripts built around the swipe: a frame-one hook, retention pacing, captions and a keyword title. You still film and edit.

## What it does

The skill treats Shorts as their own machine. Vertical feeds and long-form video follow different rules, so one plan for both will not work. There is no thumbnail to click, which means click-through rate tells you nothing here; the algorithm weighs whether a viewer stayed or swiped, then how much of the clip they watched. A new Short gets shown to a small interest-based seed audience, and the first 30–60 minutes decide whether it travels.

Scripts follow a retention ladder. Stop the swipe in the first 0–3 seconds with on-screen text and a strong opening frame, hold one idea with burned-in captions and a deliberate loop at the end, add an angle the audience has not seen, then bridge viewers to the channel by hand. What comes out is shootable: on-screen text, voiceover, shot list, captions, keyword-rich title. Clips can run up to 3 minutes, though the skill advises picking between something under 30 seconds and something around 50–60 seconds, and posting roughly 3–7 times a week.

Publishing is not handled here. The draft goes to `scheduling-and-queue` and then WoopSocial, while swipe rate and average percentage viewed are read in YouTube Studio. AI-generated footage needs the altered-content disclosure. The skill will not invent a retention figure or a view count, so any report with numbers has to come from Studio.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill youtube-shorts -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/youtube-shorts/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/youtube-shorts/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill youtube-shorts -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/youtube-shorts/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill youtube-shorts -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/youtube-shorts/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install social-media-skills/skills youtube-shorts
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/youtube-shorts/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill youtube-shorts -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills --path skills/youtube-shorts
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/youtube-shorts/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill youtube-shorts -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/youtube-shorts/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a vertical script that survives the swipe
- diagnose why a Short underperformed
- come up with a first-frame hook
- put together captions and a keyword title
- set a posting rhythm without spamming

## Example prompts
- Write a Shorts script for our new pricing tier, hook in the first three seconds.
- My last Short flopped — walk it through the retention ladder and tell me what to fix.
- Draft a 50-second script with a looped ending and burned-in captions.

# youtube-shorts

The growth engine for **YouTube Shorts** — a discovery engine that, since late 2025, is **fully
decoupled from long-form**. Different rules, different metric, separate strategy. (Long-form is
the sibling skill **youtube-long-form**; don't run them as one plan.)

## Read these first
1. **brand-profile** — what the channel is about, its niche, non-negotiables.
2. **voice-builder** — so the Short sounds like the account (and dodges AI-slop suppression).

## The one rule: you earn reach by not being skipped
Shorts have **no thumbnail and no click** — so CTR is irrelevant. The algorithm watches
**Viewed vs Swiped Away** above all, then retention. Each Short is tested on a small
interest-based **seed audience**, and the **first 30–60 minutes decide** whether it spreads or
dies. Write every Short **backwards from the swipe.** (Full mechanics:
`references/shorts-algorithm-2026.md`.)

## The framework: the Retention Ladder
Climb four rungs in order (depth: `references/the-retention-ladder.md`):
- **Stop (0–3s):** beat the swipe — on-screen text + striking first frame, readable on mute.
  Target ~75%+ viewed. (hook-writer.)
- **Hold (~70%+ avg % viewed):** one idea, relentless pacing, burned-in captions, an intentional
  loop (chase >100% for replays).
- **Angle (information gain):** a genuinely unique take — the Anti-Repetitive AI suppresses
  recycled formats; volume without novelty is a negative.
- **Bridge:** Shorts are discovery; bridge to the channel/long-form **manually** (the engines are
  decoupled) and via keyword-rich titles for Shorts search.

## Length + cadence (verify-quarterly)
Up to 3 minutes, but bimodal — **<30s** for completion, **~50–60s** for total views; design the
idea first, then the shortest complete length. Post **~3–7/week** (consistency over spam); note
```
