## What it does

This skill guides video production using the CHAIN framework: Click, Hook, AVD, Iterate, and Next. It prioritizes packaging by generating titles and thumbnail concepts before drafting any dialogue. The resulting draft includes an opening hook for the first 30 seconds, pacing cues every 60 to 90 seconds, search chapters, and descriptions. Recommended video lengths fall between 8 and 15 minutes, cutting padding to protect retention.

The skill handles planning and scripting rather than direct video production. Humans remain responsible for filming and editing. Publishing connects through `scheduling-and-queue` into WoopSocial, while analytics and playlist setup stay inside native YouTube Studio. It explicitly refuses to invent metrics or write clickbait that conflicts with video content.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill youtube-long-form -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/youtube-long-form/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/youtube-long-form/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill youtube-long-form -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/youtube-long-form/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill youtube-long-form -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/youtube-long-form/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install social-media-skills/skills youtube-long-form
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/youtube-long-form/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill youtube-long-form -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills --path skills/youtube-long-form
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/youtube-long-form/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill youtube-long-form -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/youtube-long-form/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- generate title and thumbnail concepts before drafting the video
- write structured 8–15 minute scripts with a 30-second cold open
- diagnose underperforming uploads using CTR, 30-second retention, and AVD
- create YouTube chapters and descriptions for search visibility

## Example prompts
- Plan a 12-minute video about homelabs using the CHAIN framework
- Diagnose why my latest video flopped based on CTR and retention drop-offs
- Draft packaging ideas and a 30-second hook for a tutorial on Docker

# youtube-long-form

The growth engine for **YouTube long-form** — the **opposite engine from Shorts**. No swipe feed
to win; instead a **packaging gate** (the click) and a **retention gate** (do they stay, and watch
more). It's **decoupled** from Shorts, though the Short→long click-through is now tracked. (Sibling:
**youtube-shorts** — don't run them as one plan.)

## Read these first
1. **brand-profile** — niche, positioning, non-negotiables.
2. **voice-builder** — so the script and packaging sound like the channel (not generic narration).

## The two-metric gate + the dominant signal
- **CTR gets the click; AVD keeps it.** High CTR + low AVD = misleading packaging → demoted;
  low CTR + high AVD = good content, **fix packaging first**.
- **Session contribution is the dominant 2026 signal** (it replaced absolute watch time). Videos
  that **extend the session** get amplified in Suggested; videos that **end sessions** get buried.
  Build each upload as a link in a chain. (Full mechanics: `references/longform-algorithm-2026.md`.)

## The framework: CHAIN
(Depth: `references/the-chain-framework.md`.)
- **C — Click:** package (title + thumbnail) **before** scripting; clarity > clickbait > clutter;
  A/B test. (ideogram / nano-banana for thumbnails.)
- **H — Hook:** the first 30s **pays off the promise** — payoff/stakes/question, no logo, no
  "hey guys." (hook-writer.)
- **A — AVD:** re-hook every 60–90s; one topic; **no padding**; length matched to idea (8–15 min
  when retention holds).
- **I — Iterate:** diagnose with three numbers — **CTR** (packaging), **30-sec retention** (hook),
  **AVD %** (structure); test one variable at a time.
- **N — Next:** engineer session contribution — end screens, playlists, series, a deliberate
  "watch next"; bridge from Shorts.

## Length, cadence, packaging-first
8–15 min optimal **when retention holds** — total watch time can favor longer, but **padding tanks
AVD and gets you demoted** (cutting length is often the biggest fix). ~1–2 long-form/week; gaps get
deprioritized. **Package before you produce.** Output is a **packaging concept + a shootable
```
