## What it does

The skill splits the work by source. YouTube videos that already carry captions go through `scripts/fetch_transcript.py`, which reads the caption track, downloads nothing and needs no API key. Everything else — Instagram, TikTok, X, Vimeo, Facebook, YouTube clips without captions, and local video files — goes through `scripts/fetch_media.py`, which grabs the media with `yt-dlp` and transcribes it on your machine with Whisper. Either script can write Markdown, plain text, JSON, SRT or WebVTT.

Run `fetch_media.py --check-deps` before the first download. It wants `ffmpeg`, `yt-dlp` for URLs, and a Whisper command-line tool (`mlx_whisper` on Apple Silicon, otherwise `whisper`). Clips up to 3 minutes long get a contact sheet of frames embedded as `<note>.frames.jpg`, with the time of each tile listed — worth a look before summarising, since short videos often put tool names and prompts on screen. Whisper mishears names and fills gaps over music, so correct only what the frames or the user back up.

Sites that block anonymous access make the script exit with code `4` and print the options. Check whether `yt-dlp` is out of date first: platforms change often and an update clears many blocks. From there you can open the page in a browser, run the bundled `scripts/browser_media_links.js`, fetch the signed audio and video links with `curl -L -o`, and hand the files to the script.

## Requirements
- Works with: Obsidian

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JimmySadek/video-fetcher-to-markdown --skill youtube-fetcher -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/youtube-fetcher/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/youtube-fetcher/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JimmySadek/video-fetcher-to-markdown --skill youtube-fetcher -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/youtube-fetcher/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JimmySadek/video-fetcher-to-markdown --skill youtube-fetcher -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/youtube-fetcher/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install JimmySadek/video-fetcher-to-markdown youtube-fetcher
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/youtube-fetcher/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JimmySadek/video-fetcher-to-markdown --skill youtube-fetcher -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/JimmySadek/video-fetcher-to-markdown
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/youtube-fetcher/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JimmySadek/video-fetcher-to-markdown --skill youtube-fetcher -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/JimmySadek/video-fetcher-to-markdown/tree/HEAD/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- get a YouTube transcript without downloading the video
- transcribe a TikTok or Instagram clip that has no captions
- answer a question about a video with timestamp links
- file a video into an Obsidian vault as a Markdown note
- read the on-screen text of a clip from its frames

## Example prompts
- Save a note from this video: https://youtu.be/VIDEO_ID
- What do they cover in this clip? Answer with timestamps: https://www.tiktok.com/@user/video/123
- Transcribe the local file `/path/to/video.mp4` and save it to my vault

# Video Fetcher to Markdown

Formerly YouTube Fetcher. The skill name stays `youtube-fetcher` so existing installs keep updating.
An independent open-source tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by YouTube, Google, or
any other video platform it reads.

Two scripts, one for each kind of source:

| Source | Script | How |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube with captions | `scripts/fetch_transcript.py` | Reads YouTube's captions. Fast, downloads nothing, no API key. |
| Instagram, TikTok, X, Vimeo, Facebook and other sites; YouTube without captions; a local video or audio file | `scripts/fetch_media.py` | Downloads with `yt-dlp`, transcribes locally with Whisper, adds a contact sheet of frames. |

Both export archival Markdown, plain text, JSON, SRT, or WebVTT and share the same
output rules below. Optional `yt-dlp` adds creator descriptions, chapters, upload
dates, and duration to YouTube notes.

## Choose the result the user asked for

- **Bare link, archive, or save:** create a Markdown note. Use the user's named
  directory or exact file when supplied, then report the absolute saved path.
- **Summary, question, or analysis:** retrieve captions with `--stdout --timestamps`,
  read the result, and answer the request with timestamp links where useful.
  Saving an extra note is optional unless requested.
- **Transcript or subtitle export:** choose the requested format. `--format txt`
  means plain text; `text` is the legacy name for Markdown.
- **Several explicit links:** run once per video and report each outcome. A watch
  URL containing a playlist still means one video; do not expand a playlist.
