## What it does

The skill queries the TranscriptAPI service to extract structured YouTube content without needing Google Cloud credentials or OAuth tokens. It pulls full transcripts with timestamps, video view counts, metadata, search results, and channel uploads directly from video links or @handles.

All calls require an internet connection and the `TRANSCRIPT_API_KEY` environment variable. Every HTTP request must also include a custom `User-Agent` header with the agent name. Cloudflare blocks any request missing this header with error 403 and code 1010. Resolving handles and fetching the latest 15 channel videos are free, while transcripts, search queries, and paginated video lists consume 1 credit per page.

The tool is read-only. It cannot upload videos, update channel settings, or manage accounts.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ZeroPointRepo/youtube-skills --skill youtube-data -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/youtube-data/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/youtube-data/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ZeroPointRepo/youtube-skills --skill youtube-data -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/youtube-data/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ZeroPointRepo/youtube-skills --skill youtube-data -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/youtube-data/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ZeroPointRepo/youtube-skills youtube-data
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/youtube-data/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ZeroPointRepo/youtube-skills --skill youtube-data -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ZeroPointRepo/youtube-skills --path clawhub/youtube-data
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/youtube-data/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ZeroPointRepo/youtube-skills --skill youtube-data -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ZeroPointRepo/youtube-skills/tree/HEAD/clawhub/youtube-data/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull video transcripts with timestamps for text summarization
- retrieve the latest 15 channel uploads with exact view counts
- search YouTube videos using upload date and duration filters
- check available caption languages before spending API credits

## Example prompts
- Summarize the transcript of this YouTube video and extract main takeaways.
- Get the latest 15 videos from @TED and list their view counts.
- Search for short videos about Python published this week.

# YouTube Data

YouTube data access via [TranscriptAPI.com](https://transcriptapi.com) — lightweight alternative to Google's YouTube Data API.

## Setup

If `$TRANSCRIPT_API_KEY` is not set, read [references/auth-setup.md](references/auth-setup.md) and follow the instructions there to get and store the key.

## Required Headers

Every request needs two headers:

- **Authorization:** `Bearer $TRANSCRIPT_API_KEY`
- **User-Agent:** your agent's name and version if known (e.g. `HermesAgent/0.11.0`, `ClaudeCode/1.0`). Version is optional — agent name alone is fine. Do not omit this header or send a bare default — Cloudflare will return a 403 (error code 1010) and block the request.

## API Reference

Full OpenAPI spec: [transcriptapi.com/openapi.json](https://transcriptapi.com/openapi.json) — consult this for the latest parameters and schemas.

## Video Data (transcript + metadata) — 1 credit

```bash
curl -s "https://transcriptapi.com/api/v2/youtube/transcript\
?video_url=VIDEO_URL&format=json&include_timestamp=true&send_metadata=true" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $TRANSCRIPT_API_KEY" \
  -H "User-Agent: YourAgent/1.0"
```

**Response:**

```json
{
  "video_id": "dQw4w9WgXcQ",
  "language": "en",
  "transcript": [
    { "text": "We're no strangers to love", "start": 18.0, "duration": 3.5 }
  ],
  "metadata": {
    "title": "Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up",
    "author_name": "Rick Astley",
    "thumbnail_url": "https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dQw4w9WgXcQ/maxresdefault.jpg"
  }
}
```

## Video Info & Rich Metadata

Check languages before spending a transcript credit (free), or pull view/like counts, publish date, description, duration, and tags (1 credit):

```bash
