# excalidraw-skill

This skill gives an agent a live Excalidraw canvas for diagrams, file exchange, and scene edits. Use it for Mermaid conversion, snapshots, and element-level changes.

## What it does

excalidraw-skill connects an agent to a live Excalidraw canvas. It can create and edit elements, bind arrows, align and distribute objects, group them, duplicate them, and lock them. The skill also handles `.excalidraw`, PNG, and SVG files, saves canvas snapshots, and converts Mermaid diagrams into Excalidraw scenes.

The main interface is the CLI: `npx -y mcp-excalidraw-server <command>` starts the canvas server when a canvas command needs it. MCP tools and a REST API are available as alternatives. I would use MCP tools when they are present because results go straight into the agent context and screenshots return as images.

Mermaid conversion and viewport control require an open canvas tab. The REST API needs the server to be running first, so the CLI is the more direct choice when the agent should start the canvas itself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yctimlin/mcp_excalidraw --skill excalidraw-skill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/excalidraw-skill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/excalidraw-skill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yctimlin/mcp_excalidraw --skill excalidraw-skill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/excalidraw-skill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yctimlin/mcp_excalidraw --skill excalidraw-skill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/excalidraw-skill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install yctimlin/mcp_excalidraw excalidraw-skill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/excalidraw-skill/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yctimlin/mcp_excalidraw --skill excalidraw-skill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/yctimlin/mcp_excalidraw --path skills/excalidraw-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/excalidraw-skill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yctimlin/mcp_excalidraw --skill excalidraw-skill -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/yctimlin/mcp_excalidraw/tree/HEAD/skills/excalidraw-skill/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create an architecture or flow diagram on a live canvas
- turn a Mermaid file into an Excalidraw scene
- align, group, duplicate, or lock canvas elements
- import `.excalidraw` and export PNG or SVG files
- save and restore a canvas snapshot

## Example prompts
- Create a service architecture diagram on the canvas, label each block, and connect the blocks with arrows.
- Import `architecture.excalidraw`, align the elements, group them, and export the result as PNG.
- Convert the Mermaid diagram in `diagram.mmd` to Excalidraw, then show me a screenshot of the canvas.

name: excalidraw-skill
description: Excalidraw canvas toolkit for creating, editing, and refining diagrams on a live canvas. Use when an agent needs to (1) draw or lay out diagrams, (2) iteratively refine them by describing the scene and screenshotting its own work, (3) export/import .excalidraw files or PNG/SVG images, (4) save/restore canvas snapshots, (5) convert Mermaid to Excalidraw, or (6) perform element-level CRUD, alignment, distribution, grouping, duplication, and locking. Primary interface is the bundled CLI (npx -y mcp-excalidraw-server <command>) which auto-starts the canvas server; MCP tools and a REST API are equivalent alternatives.

# Excalidraw Skill

## Step 0: Pick an Interface

Three interfaces drive the same live canvas. Pick the first one that applies:

1. **MCP tools** — if `excalidraw/*` tools (e.g. `batch_create_elements`) are in your tool list, prefer them: results land directly in your context, and screenshots come back as images without touching disk.
2. **CLI** (default when no MCP tools are present):
   ```bash
   npx -y mcp-excalidraw-server <command>
   ```
   No setup needed — any canvas-touching command **auto-starts the canvas server** on `http://127.0.0.1:3000` (first `npx` run downloads the package). If the CLI is installed globally (`npm i -g mcp-excalidraw-server`), the shorter alias `excalidraw-canvas <command>` works too.
3. **REST API** (last resort, e.g. from application code): HTTP endpoints on `http://127.0.0.1:3000` — see `references/cheatsheet.md` for payloads. The server must already be running.

The canvas URL comes from `EXPRESS_SERVER_URL` (default `http://127.0.0.1:3000`). Screenshots and image exports render headless inside the canvas server, so you never need a browser tab to check your own work. Only mermaid conversion and viewport control need an open tab (CLI exits with code 4 when it's missing). Still tell the user the URL — opening it lets them watch you draw.

### CLI Quick Reference

Results are JSON on stdout — except `describe` (plain text) and raw-content output when `--out` is omitted (`export` scene JSON, `screenshot --format svg`). Diagnostics on stderr. Exit codes: 0 ok, 1 error, 2 usage, 3 canvas unreachable, 4 browser tab required (only `mermaid` and `screenshot --renderer browser`).

| Task | Command |
|------|---------|
| Start / stop / inspect server | `start`, `stop`, `status` |
| Create elements (batch) | `add elements.json` or `echo '[...]' \| add` or `add --one '{...}'` |
| Multi-op patch in one call | `apply patch.json` — `{"create":[...],"update":[{"id":"a","set":{...}}],"delete":[...]}` |
| Read one / query many | `get <id>`, `query [--type t] [--bbox x0,y0,x1,y1] [--filter k=v] [--filter-json '{...}']` |

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the e4d4a32caf939baf tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
