## What it does

Two modes. Template mode first dumps a cell inventory with every placeholder it can find, like `{{TITLE}}` or `${date}`, then swaps in your values while leaving the formatting alone. Useful when a branded template comes from outside and you cannot afford to break it.

Scratch mode takes a `spec.json`: sheets, rows, formulas, column widths, freeze panes, auto filter. The `generate-scratch.ts` script turns that into a workbook. Formulas are set per cell, for example `SUM(B2:E2)`.

Deno is required, and the scripts run with `--allow-read` and `--allow-write`. Pivot tables and charts get limited support, the older `.xls` format is out, and you do not need this skill just to open a spreadsheet. If your project already has a report generator, this becomes a second way to do the same job — pick one.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill xlsx-generator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/xlsx-generator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/xlsx-generator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill xlsx-generator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/xlsx-generator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill xlsx-generator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/xlsx-generator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills xlsx-generator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/xlsx-generator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill xlsx-generator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/general/document-processing/spreadsheet/xlsx-generator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/xlsx-generator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill xlsx-generator -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- generate a recurring report from a template and a data set
- fill a branded XLSX with values without losing formatting
- pull cells, formulas and structure out of an existing workbook
- build a workbook with formulas and an auto filter from JSON
- automate spreadsheet exports instead of doing them by hand

## Example prompts
- analyze financial-template.xlsx and list every placeholder
- build the report from spec.json into output.xlsx
- replace {{REPORT_TITLE}} and {{DATE}} in the template and save the result

# XLSX Generator

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Creating Excel spreadsheets programmatically from data or specifications
- Populating branded templates with dynamic content while preserving formatting
- Extracting cell data, formulas, and structure from existing XLSX files
- Finding and replacing placeholder text like `{{TITLE}}` or `${date}` in cells
- Automating spreadsheet generation workflows (reports, data exports, financial statements)

Do NOT use this skill when:
- User wants to open/view spreadsheets (use native Excel or viewer)
- Complex pivot tables or charts are required (limited support)
- Working with older .xls format (XLSX only)
- Real-time collaborative editing is needed

## Prerequisites

- Deno installed (https://deno.land/)
- Input XLSX files for template-based operations
- JSON specification for scratch generation

## Quick Start

### Two Modes of Operation

1. **Template Mode**: Modify existing branded templates
   - Analyze template to find placeholders and structure
   - Replace `{{PLACEHOLDERS}}` with actual values

2. **Scratch Mode**: Create spreadsheets from nothing using JSON specifications

## Instructions

### Mode 1: Template-Based Generation

#### Step 1a: Analyze the Template

Extract cell inventory to understand what can be replaced:

```bash
deno run --allow-read scripts/analyze-template.ts financial-template.xlsx > inventory.json
```

**Output** (inventory.json):
```json
{
  "filename": "financial-template.xlsx",
  "sheetCount": 3,
  "sheets": [
    {
      "name": "Summary",
      "rowCount": 25,
      "colCount": 8,
      "usedRange": "A1:H25",
      "cells": [
        { "address": "A1", "row": 1, "col": 1, "value": "{{REPORT_TITLE}}", "type": "string" },
        { "address": "B3", "row": 3, "col": 2, "value": "{{DATE}}", "type": "string" },
        { "address": "C5", "row": 5, "col": 3, "value": null, "type": "number", "formula": "SUM(C6:C20)" }
      ]
    }
  ],
  "placeholders": [
    { "tag": "{{REPORT_TITLE}}", "location": "Summary!A1", "sheet": "Summary", "address": "A1" },
    { "tag": "{{DATE}}", "location": "Summary!B3", "sheet": "Summary", "address": "B3" }
  ],
  "hasFormulas": true
}
```
