## What it does

The skill handles questions about college cross country and track and field. It reads TFRRS public pages and The Stride Report feed, and needs no API keys. Five commands ship with it: `search_athlete` looks up a name on a current team roster, `get_athlete_profile` returns name, school, eligibility, every personal record and the full meet history by season, `get_team_roster` lists a team's XC or TF squad, `get_meet_results` returns event results and team scores, and `get_news` fetches recent articles.

\`get_athlete_profile` takes three parameters, and all three have to match the athlete's TFRRS URL exactly: the numeric `athlete_id`, the school slug with underscores instead of spaces, and the name slug. Don't guess the slugs — open the athlete page on tfrrs.org and copy the address. That is where lookups break most often: wrong case or a space where an underscore belongs, and the profile comes back empty.

Graduated athletes are the other snag. `search_athlete` only covers current rosters, so a former runner returns no matches and you need a direct TFRRS link instead. TFRRS also keeps separate profiles for cross country and for track and field, so complete PR coverage sometimes means fetching both IDs. For a cross country meet, pass `sport="xc"` to `get_meet_results`: XC uses its own ID range, and without the flag you get an unrelated track meet. Python 3.10+ and internet access are required.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add machina-sports/sports-skills --skill xctf-data -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/xctf-data/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/xctf-data/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add machina-sports/sports-skills --skill xctf-data -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/xctf-data/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add machina-sports/sports-skills --skill xctf-data -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/xctf-data/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install machina-sports/sports-skills xctf-data
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/xctf-data/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add machina-sports/sports-skills --skill xctf-data -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/machina-sports/sports-skills --path skills/xctf-data
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/xctf-data/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add machina-sports/sports-skills --skill xctf-data -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/machina-sports/sports-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/xctf-data/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check an athlete's personal records across every event
- collect a cross country season's results with dates and places
- pull a team's current XC or track roster
- get event results and team scores from a specific meet
- find recent college track and field news

## Example prompts
- What are Jane Hedengren's PRs?
- Show me Jane Hedengren's 2025 XC season results
- Show me the UC Davis women's XC roster

# XC/TF Data (TFRRS — NCAA Cross Country & Track and Field)

Before writing queries, consult `references/api-reference.md` for parameters, URL conventions, and return shapes.

## Setup

Before first use, check if the CLI is available:
```bash
which sports-skills || pip install sports-skills
```
If `pip install` fails, install from GitHub:
```bash
pip install git+https://github.com/machina-sports/sports-skills.git
```
Requires Python 3.10+. No API keys required. All data comes from TFRRS public pages and The Stride Report RSS feed.

## Quick Start

CLI (preferred):
```bash
sports-skills xctf get_athlete_profile --athlete_id=9230145 --school=BYU --name=Jane_Hedengren
sports-skills xctf get_news --limit=5
```

Python SDK:
```python
from sports_skills import xctf
profile = xctf.get_athlete_profile(
    athlete_id="9230145",
    school="BYU",
    name="Jane_Hedengren",
)
```

## CRITICAL: Before Any Query

All three parameters are required and must match the athlete's TFRRS URL exactly:

```
https://www.tfrrs.org/athletes/{athlete_id}/{school}/{name}.html
```

- `athlete_id` — numeric ID (e.g. `9230145`)
- `school` — school slug with underscores, not spaces (e.g. `BYU`)
- `name` — athlete name slug (e.g. `Jane_Hedengren`)

Do NOT guess slugs. Find them by navigating to the athlete on tfrrs.org and copying the URL.
