# xcode-build-fixer

Applies approved Xcode build optimizations and re-benchmarks them to confirm the gain. Useful once an optimization plan is signed off.

## What it does

The skill reads an approved plan from `.build-benchmark/optimization-plan.md` and implements only the checked items. You can also hand it a direct instruction, such as switching `DEBUG_INFORMATION_FORMAT` to `dwarf` for Debug. Changes land one logical fix at a time, so each stays reviewable and reversible.

Four categories are covered. Build settings in `project.pbxproj`: `SWIFT_COMPILATION_MODE = singlefile` for Debug, `EAGER_LINKING = YES`, aligning settings across targets. Script phases: declaring input and output files so Xcode can skip unchanged scripts, plus configuration guards like `[[ "$CONFIGURATION" != "Release" ]] && exit 0`. Source-level fixes cut type-checker work — explicit annotations, splitting long chains, marking unsubclassed classes `final`, breaking large SwiftUI `body` properties apart. The fourth is SPM restructuring.

When the edits are in, the skill runs `scripts/benchmark_builds.py` with the same inputs as the original baseline and compares medians. A slower number is not automatically a regression: settings such as `COMPILATION_CACHE_ENABLE_CACHING = YES` cost more on a cold build while cached builds get faster. Before pinning a dependency version, it advises checking tags with `git ls-remote --tags <url>` and confirming the version resolves.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AvdLee/Xcode-Build-Optimization-Agent-Skill --skill xcode-build-fixer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/xcode-build-fixer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/xcode-build-fixer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AvdLee/Xcode-Build-Optimization-Agent-Skill --skill xcode-build-fixer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/xcode-build-fixer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AvdLee/Xcode-Build-Optimization-Agent-Skill --skill xcode-build-fixer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/xcode-build-fixer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AvdLee/Xcode-Build-Optimization-Agent-Skill xcode-build-fixer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/xcode-build-fixer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AvdLee/Xcode-Build-Optimization-Agent-Skill --skill xcode-build-fixer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AvdLee/Xcode-Build-Optimization-Agent-Skill --path skills/xcode-build-fixer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/xcode-build-fixer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AvdLee/Xcode-Build-Optimization-Agent-Skill --skill xcode-build-fixer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/AvdLee/Xcode-Build-Optimization-Agent-Skill/tree/HEAD/skills/xcode-build-fixer/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- apply an approved optimization plan item by item
- set build settings in `project.pbxproj` and verify with `xcodebuild -showBuildSettings`
- declare input and output files so Xcode skips unchanged script phases
- cut type-checker overhead with annotations, `final`, and split expressions
- re-benchmark builds and tell a regression from a one-off slowdown

## Example prompts
- apply the checked items from `.build-benchmark/optimization-plan.md`
- set `SWIFT_COMPILATION_MODE = singlefile` for the Debug configuration
- re-run the benchmark and compare medians against the baseline

# Xcode Build Fixer

Use this skill to implement approved build optimization changes and verify them with a benchmark.

## Core Rules

- Only apply changes that have explicit developer approval.
- Apply one logical fix at a time so changes are reviewable and reversible.
- Re-benchmark after applying changes to verify improvement.
- Report exactly what changed, which files were touched, and the measured delta.
- If a change produces no improvement or causes a regression, flag it immediately.

## Inputs

The fixer expects one of:

- An approved optimization plan at `.build-benchmark/optimization-plan.md` with checked approval boxes.
- An explicit developer instruction describing the fix to apply (e.g., "set `DEBUG_INFORMATION_FORMAT` to `dwarf` for Debug").

When working from an optimization plan, read the approval checklist and implement only the checked items.

## Fix Categories

### Build Settings

Change `project.pbxproj` values to match the recommendations in [build-settings-best-practices.md](references/build-settings-best-practices.md).

Typical fixes:

- Set `DEBUG_INFORMATION_FORMAT = dwarf` for Debug
- Set `SWIFT_COMPILATION_MODE = singlefile` for Debug
- Enable `COMPILATION_CACHE_ENABLE_CACHING = YES`
- Enable `EAGER_LINKING = YES` for Debug
- Align cross-target settings to eliminate module variants

When editing `project.pbxproj`, locate the correct `buildSettings` block by matching the target name and configuration name. Verify the change with `xcodebuild -showBuildSettings` after applying.

### Script Phases

Fix run script phases that waste time during incremental or debug builds.

Typical fixes:
