## What it does

The skill gives the agent a checklist for writing WXT extensions without the usual performance mistakes. Rules sit in eight categories ordered by impact: service worker and content script injection come first as critical, then messaging and storage, then bundle size, manifest, UI and TypeScript. Each rule carries a prefix such as `svc-`, `inject-`, `msg-` or `store-`.

There are 49 rules in total, and each links to its own reference file. The content targets WXT v0.20 and later. That gives the agent something concrete when it writes background scripts, picks `runAt` timing or decides between the isolated and main world for an injected script.

The same list works as a review pass. Listeners in a service worker, for instance, have to be registered synchronously, otherwise events are missed. Treat the rules as checks to run before you ship, not as code to paste.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill wxt-browser-extensions -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/wxt-browser-extensions/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/wxt-browser-extensions/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill wxt-browser-extensions -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/wxt-browser-extensions/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill wxt-browser-extensions -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/wxt-browser-extensions/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pproenca/dot-skills wxt-browser-extensions
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/wxt-browser-extensions/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill wxt-browser-extensions -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pproenca/dot-skills --path skills/.experimental/wxt-browser-extensions
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/wxt-browser-extensions/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill wxt-browser-extensions -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- catch missed events caused by async listener registration in a service worker
- pick the right world and run timing for a content script
- move in-memory state into storage so it survives a worker restart
- wire messaging between extension contexts without loops
- shrink the bundle and ask for minimal manifest permissions

## Example prompts
- Write the WXT background script and check it against the `svc-` rules
- Look at my content script: which world and `runAt` timing fit here?
- Review `entrypoints/popup/App.tsx` for performance issues using the WXT rules

# Community WXT Browser Extensions Best Practices

Comprehensive performance optimization guide for WXT browser extension development. Contains 49 rules across 8 categories, prioritized by impact to guide automated refactoring and code generation. Updated for WXT v0.20+.

## When to Apply

Reference these guidelines when:
- Writing new WXT browser extension code
- Implementing service worker background scripts
- Injecting content scripts into web pages
- Setting up messaging between extension contexts
- Configuring manifest permissions and resources

## Rule Categories by Priority

| Priority | Category | Impact | Prefix |
|----------|----------|--------|--------|
| 1 | Service Worker Lifecycle | CRITICAL | `svc-` |
| 2 | Content Script Injection | CRITICAL | `inject-` |
| 3 | Messaging Architecture | HIGH | `msg-` |
| 4 | Storage Patterns | HIGH | `store-` |
| 5 | Bundle Optimization | MEDIUM-HIGH | `bundle-` |
| 6 | Manifest Configuration | MEDIUM | `manifest-` |
| 7 | UI Performance | MEDIUM | `ui-` |
| 8 | TypeScript Patterns | LOW-MEDIUM | `ts-` |

## Quick Reference

### 1. Service Worker Lifecycle (CRITICAL)

- [`svc-register-listeners-synchronously`](references/svc-register-listeners-synchronously.md) - Register listeners synchronously to prevent missed events
- [`svc-avoid-global-state`](references/svc-avoid-global-state.md) - Use storage instead of in-memory state
- [`svc-keep-alive-patterns`](references/svc-keep-alive-patterns.md) - Keep service worker alive for long operations
- [`svc-handle-install-update`](references/svc-handle-install-update.md) - Handle install and update lifecycle events
- [`svc-offscreen-documents`](references/svc-offscreen-documents.md) - Use offscreen documents for DOM operations
- [`svc-declarative-net-request`](references/svc-declarative-net-request.md) - Use declarative rules for network blocking

### 2. Content Script Injection (CRITICAL)

- [`inject-use-main-function`](references/inject-use-main-function.md) - Place runtime code inside main() function
- [`inject-choose-correct-world`](references/inject-choose-correct-world.md) - Select ISOLATED or MAIN world appropriately
- [`inject-run-at-timing`](references/inject-run-at-timing.md) - Configure appropriate runAt timing
