## What it does

The skill hands you a skeleton for a systems conference submission. It includes a page allocation table: abstract around 0.25 pages, introduction 1.5–2, design 3–4, implementation 0.5–1, evaluation 3–4, related work 1, conclusion 0.5. Each section comes with a paragraph-level template.

The abstract is broken into five sentences: problem context, gap in existing work, a thesis of the form "X is better for Y in Z", approach plus headline result, and impact. The introduction follows problem → gap → key insight → contributions. In the design section every choice has to discuss alternatives, and in evaluation each conclusion is stated three times: as a hypothesis at the section opening, as a result at the closing, and in the figure caption.

Four writing patterns are covered: gap analysis G1–Gn, observation-driven O1–O3 from production data, a numbered contribution list with section cross-references, and the thesis formula. A separate table lists venue differences: OSDI and NSDI at 12 USENIX pages, SOSP at 12 ACM SIGOPS pages, ASPLOS at 11, EuroSys at 12. Venue rules change, so check the current CFP. The skill supplies structure, not prose, and it explicitly forbids fabricating observations, traces or results.

For LaTeX output and citation checks it hands off to `/paper-write`; for a research outline, run `paper-plan` first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill writing-systems-papers -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/writing-systems-papers/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/writing-systems-papers/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill writing-systems-papers -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/writing-systems-papers/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill writing-systems-papers -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/writing-systems-papers/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep writing-systems-papers
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/writing-systems-papers/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill writing-systems-papers -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --path skills/writing-systems-papers
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/writing-systems-papers/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill writing-systems-papers -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep/tree/HEAD/skills/writing-systems-papers/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split a 12-page systems paper across sections
- draft a five-sentence abstract from a template
- map introduction gaps to design answers
- check that every design choice discusses alternatives
- match the page budget to venue limits

## Example prompts
- /writing-systems-papers OSDI
- Lay out my distributed storage paper for SOSP by page budget
- Check my introduction for problem, gap, insight and numbered contributions

# Writing Systems Papers: Paragraph-Level Blueprint

Structural guidance for **$ARGUMENTS**

## Relationship to Other ARIS Skills

- **paper-write**: General paper generation workflow with citation verification. This skill complements it with systems-specific structural blueprints.
- **paper-slides**: Conference presentation generation (Beamer+PPTX). Already covers talks — no overlap.
- **paper-plan**: Research outline creation. Use paper-plan first, then this skill for paragraph-level structure.

**Boundary**: paper-write handles the generation workflow (LaTeX output, DBLP verification, section-by-section drafting). This skill provides the **structural skeleton** — page budgets, paragraph roles, and writing patterns specific to systems venues.
