# writing-sql

Writes SQL for Celigo RDBMS exports and imports and helps debug errors in rdbms.query. Useful when an integration reads from or writes to Snowflake, Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, BigQuery or Redshift.

## What it does

The skill covers what SQL to write and how to write it. Queries are Handlebars templates: the platform evaluates expressions like `{{{record.fieldName}}}` at runtime, then runs the resulting SQL against the connected database. Inside you get a context decision matrix (export, delta, once, import `per_record` and `per_page`, bulk merge override), syntax rules and dialect patterns.

The core rule: inject strings and dates with double braces `{{record.name}}`, which add the quotes and double embedded apostrophes for you. Numbers, table and column names go through triple braces `{{{ }}}`. Wrap a triple-brace value in your own quotes and the first apostrophe in the data breaks the statement, leaving it open to SQL injection. For imports, `rdbms.query` is an array of strings, not a single string.

Before writing SQL, the skill suggests inspecting the live schema with `celigo metadata types` and `celigo metadata fields`. Snowflake needs fully qualified names like `database.schema.table`. A delta query without both variables in `postData` renders empty and fails to compile, so test the document before saving it.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL, Snowflake

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill writing-sql -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/writing-sql/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/writing-sql/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill writing-sql -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/writing-sql/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill writing-sql -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/writing-sql/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install celigo/ai writing-sql
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/writing-sql/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill writing-sql -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/celigo/ai --path skills/writing-sql
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/writing-sql/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill writing-sql -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/celigo/ai/tree/HEAD/skills/writing-sql/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a SELECT for an export filtered by a record field
- build a delta query on `lastExportDateTime`
- inject values into an INSERT without SQL injection risk
- choose between `per_page`, `per_record` and `bulk_load`
- fix a query that breaks on quotes in the data

## Example prompts
- Write the SQL for a Postgres order export filtered by `record.id`
- Make a delta export: select rows where `updated_at` is greater than `lastExportDateTime`
- MySQL import: insert records with a duplicate check, `queryType` is `per_page`

# Writing SQL for RDBMS Integrations

RDBMS exports and imports use SQL queries to read from and write to relational databases. Queries are Handlebars templates -- the platform evaluates expressions like `{{{record.fieldName}}}` at runtime, then executes the resulting SQL against the connected database.

This skill covers **what SQL to write and how to write it**. For which adaptor type to use, connection setup, and queryType selection, see the related skills below. When the task is to create an export or import, create it with the query in place rather than handing back the SQL -- [Delta export](#delta-export-incremental) shows a complete export.

## Quick Reference

### Context decision matrix

| Where | Field | Handlebars prefix | Braces | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Export query | `rdbms.query` | `record.` (parameterized) or none (standalone) | `{{{ }}}` | `SELECT * FROM orders WHERE id = {{{record.id}}}` |
| Export delta query | `rdbms.query` | platform-injected tokens | `{{ }}` (adds the quotes) | `WHERE updated_at > {{lastExportDateTime}}` |
| Export once mark-as-processed | `rdbms.once.query` | `record.` | `{{{ }}}` | `UPDATE orders SET exported = true WHERE id = {{{record.id}}}` |
| Import per_record query | `rdbms.query[]` | `record.` | `{{ }}` strings, `{{{ }}}` numbers | `INSERT INTO users (name, age) VALUES ({{record.name}}, {{{record.age}}})` |
| Import per_page query | `rdbms.query[]` | `batch_of_records` + `record.` | `{{ }}` strings, `{{{ }}}` numbers | `{{#each batch_of_records}}...{{record.field}}...{{/each}}` |
| Import bulk_load override | `rdbms.bulkLoad.overrideMergeQuery` | staging table ref | `{{ }}` | `MERGE INTO target USING {{import.rdbms.bulkLoad.preMergeTemporaryTable}}` |

### Key syntax rules

1. **Always use `record.` prefix** (AFE 2.0). Never bare `fieldName` or `data.fieldName`.
