# writing-mstest-tests

A skill that fixes and modernizes existing MSTest tests: picks the right assertion, keeps expected/actual order, and respects your installed MSTest version.

## What it does

The skill kicks in when you ask to fix, rewrite, update or explain MSTest tests and MSTest-specific configuration. It covers assertions by kind: Boolean, collections, strings, numbers, null, identity, exceptions, hard casts and `object[]`. It also handles `TestContext` and lifecycle, timeouts and cancellation, OS and CI conditions, retries, cleanup and parallelization.

Before touching code it resolves the MSTest version from the project — `MSTest.Sdk`, the `MSTest` metapackage, or `MSTest.TestFramework` plus `MSTest.TestAdapter`. That decides which APIs are fair game. `Assert.ThrowsExactly` and the unified `Assert.Contains`, `HasCount`, `IsEmpty` and `IsNotEmpty` landed in 3.8; `Assert.IsGreaterThan`, `IsLessThan`, `IsInRange`, `StartsWith`, `EndsWith` and `MatchesRegex` in 3.10. On older versions you get a compatible fallback instead of code that fails to compile.

For repository-scoped work it first looks for `.agents/skill-overlays/dotnet-test/writing-mstest-tests.md` at the repo root. If that file declares `core: dotnet-test/writing-mstest-tests`, `binding-revision: "1"` and `mode: extend`, its naming and layout rules apply on top of the portable ones. A mismatch gets reported and the overlay is ignored. Worth checking if your repo has its own test conventions.

The skill does not design new test cases, run tests, produce report-only audits or migrate between MSTest versions — sibling skills cover those. It stays inside MSTest and .NET.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill writing-mstest-tests -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/writing-mstest-tests/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/writing-mstest-tests/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill writing-mstest-tests -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/writing-mstest-tests/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill writing-mstest-tests -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/writing-mstest-tests/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills writing-mstest-tests
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/writing-mstest-tests/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill writing-mstest-tests -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-test/skills/writing-mstest-tests
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/writing-mstest-tests/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill writing-mstest-tests -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dotnet/skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/dotnet-test/skills/writing-mstest-tests/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- replace `Assert.IsTrue` with a precise collection or null assertion
- fix swapped arguments in `Assert.AreEqual`
- convert `DynamicData` from `IEnumerable<object[]>` to ValueTuple
- make sense of an `MSTESTxxxx` diagnostic
- drop a hard cast in favor of a type-checking assertion

## Example prompts
- Rewrite this test with current MSTest assertions, version 3.10
- Why does my `Assert.AreEqual` fail with Expected and Actual swapped?
- Replace the hard cast in this test with a type check

# Writing MSTest Tests

Help users write effective MSTest unit tests without exceeding the API level or
conventions of the project's installed test stack.

## Repository overlay

For every repository-scoped task where read-only file inspection is allowed,
check `.agents/skill-overlays/dotnet-test/writing-mstest-tests.md` at the
repository root before any other discovery. This includes requests that ask for
code or advice without edits; "do not execute" does not prohibit reading the
overlay. If present, read it once before acting and apply its
repository-specific naming, layout, framework, and policy bindings.
Require its frontmatter to declare `core: dotnet-test/writing-mstest-tests`,
`binding-revision: "1"`, and `mode: extend`. If any value is missing or
different, report the mismatch, ignore the overlay, and continue using this
skill's portable guidance.
Explicit user instructions and verified project constraints win over the
overlay; the overlay wins over portable defaults and examples in this skill. If
the file is present but unreadable or conflicts with the repository, report the
problem, ignore the overlay, and continue with portable guidance subject to
