# write-manual

A skill that walks you through writing a long technical manual about one system at one pinned version, from its purpose to every request and response. Useful when the reader has to predict behaviour in cases you never showed.

## What it does

The skill lays out the whole method: research, ranked sources, a register of conflicts between them, an offline capture kit, a fixed section shape, prose limits, and an audit that has to report `TOTAL 0`. It works in any repository. In the AI Engineering from Scratch repo the tooling is already there, and `manuals/a2a-101/` is the worked example.

The method runs as 13 steps: pin the version, source URL, commit, release date and verified date; rank sources by authority; vendor what the license allows; write the fact brief; open the conflict register; build the capture kit; plan the contents from the specification; fill in `manual.json`; write the front matter; write one section at a time; draw each figure from a capture; build and audit until `TOTAL 0`.

Size targets: 60 to 100 pages, 6 to 8 parts plus a reference part, about 25 sections, 30 to 40 figures. Each section carries one thesis of at most 30 words, the sentence "When you finish this section, you can ..." inside its first two paragraphs, and exactly one `takeaways` block with at least two items. Without offline captures a manual turns into an essay — if you cannot run the subject and record its output, the method will not work.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rohitg00/ai-engineering-from-scratch --skill write-manual -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/write-manual/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/write-manual/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rohitg00/ai-engineering-from-scratch --skill write-manual -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/write-manual/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rohitg00/ai-engineering-from-scratch --skill write-manual -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/write-manual/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install rohitg00/ai-engineering-from-scratch write-manual
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/write-manual/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rohitg00/ai-engineering-from-scratch --skill write-manual -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/rohitg00/ai-engineering-from-scratch --path skills/write-manual
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/write-manual/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rohitg00/ai-engineering-from-scratch --skill write-manual -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/rohitg00/ai-engineering-from-scratch/tree/HEAD/skills/write-manual/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- document one system at a pinned version so readers can predict its behaviour
- order sources by authority and flag where two of them disagree
- record offline captures of requests and responses into deterministic files
- assemble `manual.json` with the pin, outcomes, palette and parts
- run the audit and fix findings until it prints `TOTAL 0`

## Example prompts
- Write a manual for the A2A protocol at the commit I pinned, starting from `manual.json`
- Add a section on CancelTask and terminal states to `manuals/a2a-101/`
- Build a capture kit for this protocol and cut the listings from files in `capture/out/`

# Write a manual

A manual explains one subject, such as a protocol, a file format, or a runtime, at one exact version. A lesson teaches a concept and moves on. A manual stays with one system until the reader can predict what it does in a case the manual never showed.

This skill gives the full method. It covers research, ranked sources, and a register of conflicts between sources. It also covers an offline capture kit, a fixed section shape, prose limits, and an audit that must report `TOTAL 0`. It works in any repository. Inside the AI Engineering from Scratch repo, the tooling already exists, and `manuals/a2a-101/` is the worked example.

## When to use

- The reader must predict the behavior of one system, at one version, in cases you did not show.
- The subject has a specification, a schema, or a source tree that you can pin to a commit.
- You can run the subject, or a faithful stand-in, offline and record its requests and responses.
- The result is 60 to 100 pages with figures, and other people will maintain it.

## When not to use

- You teach a general concept, such as attention or retrieval. Write a lesson instead.
- The subject has no version to pin, or changes every week.
- You cannot run the subject and cannot record its output. A manual without captures is an essay.
- You want a short how-to. A manual of fewer than about 15 sections does not need this shape.

## Size of a 101 manual

| Item | Target |
|---|---|
| pages | 60 to 100 |
| parts | 6 to 8, plus one reference part |
| sections | about 25 |
| figures | 30 to 40 |
| outcomes in `manual.json` | at least 3 |
| takeaways per section | exactly 1 block, with at least 2 items |
```
