# write-docs

A skill for editing GitBook docs as files: markdown pages, SUMMARY.md, hint and tab blocks, variables. Useful when your docs site is Git-synced instead of edited in the web UI.

## What it does

The skill kicks in when you treat GitBook documentation as plain files: in a Git-synced repo (GitHub, GitLab), a local markdown editor, or an IDE. The agent gets a map of the structure — pages, spaces, collections, `.gitbook.yaml`, the `.gitbook/assets/` and `.gitbook/includes/` folders, space variables in `.gitbook/vars.yaml`.

There is a block-picking table. Ordered instructions go into `{% stepper %}`, platform alternatives into `{% tabs %}`, warnings into `{% hint %}` with info, warning, danger or success styles. Frontmatter is covered too: `description`, `icon`, `hidden`, `vars`, and `layout` options for page width and table of contents. Variables render through expressions like `<code class="expression">space.vars.variableName</code>`.

A separate section lists the traps. Relative paths never cross space boundaries, `/spaces/<spaceId>/pages/<pageId>` is not a valid link form, and an unquoted `description:` containing a colon or hash breaks Git Sync silently, with no error message. Worth checking frontmatter after every edit. Rename a page title and you must update the link text in SUMMARY.md yourself — it drives the sidebar and pagination. OpenAPI specs don't belong in markdown; upload them through the UI, API, MCP or CLI.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GitbookIO/gitbook-skills --skill write-docs -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/write-docs/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/write-docs/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GitbookIO/gitbook-skills --skill write-docs -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/write-docs/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GitbookIO/gitbook-skills --skill write-docs -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/write-docs/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install GitbookIO/gitbook-skills write-docs
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/write-docs/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GitbookIO/gitbook-skills --skill write-docs -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/GitbookIO/gitbook-skills --path skills/write-docs
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/write-docs/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GitbookIO/gitbook-skills --skill write-docs -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/GitbookIO/gitbook-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/write-docs/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- scaffold a new GitBook page from a markdown file
- fix SUMMARY.md after renaming a page
- drop a hint or tabs block into an existing page
- set up space variables in vars.yaml
- check cross-space links before committing

## Example prompts
- add a stepper block with install steps to getting-started/installation.md
- update SUMMARY.md — quickstart.md is now titled "Quick start"
- add tabs for two languages and a warning hint to api-reference/authentication.md

Use whenever a task involves creating or editing a GitBook markdown page, writing or updating a README.md or SUMMARY.md, inserting a hint, tab, stepper, card, or other GitBook block, configuring page frontmatter or layout options, setting up variables or expressions, or formatting content for GitBook outside the GitBook UI."

### When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when working with GitBook documentation through:

* Git-synced repositories (GitHub, GitLab)
* Local markdown editors
* IDE integrations
* Any environment where you're editing GitBook content as files rather than through the GitBook UI

### Quick Reference

#### GitBook Content Structure

GitBook organizes content through pages, spaces, and collections:

* **Pages** are individual markdown files that make up your documentation
* **Spaces** are collections of pages organized into a documentation site
* **Collections** are groups of spaces

**File structure:**

```
/
  .gitbook/
    assets/              # GitBook-managed images and files
    includes/            # Reusable content blocks
    vars.yaml            # Space-level variables
  .gitbook.yaml          # Configuration
  README.md              # Homepage
  SUMMARY.md             # Table of contents
  getting-started/
    installation.md
    quickstart.md
  api-reference/
    authentication.md
    endpoints.md
```

**Frontmatter fields (quick form):**

```markdown
---
description: "Page description for SEO"
icon: book-open
hidden: true
vars:
  page_variable: value
layout:
  width: default  # or 'wide'
  tableOfContents:
    visible: true
  pagination:
    visible: true
---
```

**Variables and expressions:**

* Space variables: `/.gitbook/vars.yaml`
* Page variables: Frontmatter `vars:`
* Expression syntax: `<code class="expression">space.vars.variableName</code>`

**Most common custom blocks:**

* `{% tabs %}...{% endtabs %}` — for alternatives
* `{% hint style="..." %}...{% endhint %}` — callouts (info/warning/danger/success)
* `{% stepper %}...{% endstepper %}` — sequential steps
* `<details>...<summary>...</details>` — expandable content

**Links:**

* External: `[text](https://example.com)`
* Relative (same space): `[text](page.md)`, `[text](../folder/page.md)`
