## What it does

Honeydew tool calls run against a workspace and branch tied to the current session. This skill sets that context up. It first checks what is already selected, then lists workspaces and switches the session over if you need a different one.

For development it creates a branch. New branches always come off the current `prod` state rather than another branch, and the session follows along automatically. You can then pull the branch history to see which semantic objects changed, who touched them and when. Once the work is done, the skill opens a pull request and hands back the URL.

Deleting a branch cannot be undone, so the skill asks you to confirm the workspace and branch names first. The `prod` branch is off limits for deletion. If you delete the branch the session was on, it drops back to `prod` — worth knowing before you go looking for the context you just lost. Editing `prod` directly is not part of the flow either: changes belong on their own branch.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill workspace-branch -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/workspace-branch/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/workspace-branch/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill workspace-branch -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/workspace-branch/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill workspace-branch -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/workspace-branch/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins workspace-branch
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/workspace-branch/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill workspace-branch -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --path skills/workspace-branch
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/workspace-branch/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill workspace-branch -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins/tree/HEAD/skills/workspace-branch/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick a workspace and branch before starting work
- create a branch for edits and switch the session onto it
- see what changed on a branch and when
- open a pull request from the working branch
- remove a branch you no longer need without touching `prod`

## Example prompts
- List the workspaces and switch the session to the one I need
- Create a branch for my changes and switch to it
- Open a pull request for the current branch with a title and description

# Workspace & Branch Management

All Honeydew MCP tool calls operate against a workspace and branch set for the current session. Use this skill to set up that context, manage branches, and create pull requests when development work is ready for review.

---

## Session Setup (Required Before Any Work)

**Step 1: Check existing context**

Call `get_session_workspace_and_branch` first. If a workspace and branch are already set, skip to Step 3.

**Step 2: Select workspace and branch**

```
list_workspaces → pick a workspace → set_session_workspace_and_branch
```

If the user needs a specific branch, call `list_workspace_branches` first to see available options.

**Step 3: For development work, create a branch**

```
create_workspace_branch → session switches automatically
```

Never make modeling changes on the `prod` branch directly. Always create a development branch first.

## MCP Tools Reference

### Read-Only Tools

- `list_workspaces` — List all available workspaces. Returns the workspace name and data warehouse type (`snowflake`, `databricks`, or `bigquery`). Use the warehouse type to inform SQL dialect choices.
- `list_workspace_branches` — List all branches available for a workspace. Requires `workspace_id`.
- `get_session_workspace_and_branch` — Get the workspace and branch set for the current session.
- `get_branch_history` — Get the change history for the current session's branch. Returns a chronological list of what semantic objects were modified, by whom, and when. Optional `limit` parameter (default: 50).

### Write Tools

- `set_session_workspace_and_branch` — Set the workspace and branch for the current session. All subsequent tool calls use this context. Requires `workspace_id`; `branch_id` is optional (defaults to `prod`).
- `create_workspace_branch` — Create a new branch from the current state of the workspace's `prod` branch. The session automatically switches to the new branch. Requires `workspace_id` and `branch_name`.
