## What it does

This skill structures the internal mechanics of hands-on technical labs and conference workshops. It runs a 12-question interview to establish whether a session should be full hands-on, demo-only, or self-paced reading. It assumes the overall event format and ticketing choices are already settled.

The process maps participant prerequisites, support staff ratios, and room constraints. If an exercise requires live APIs or package registries and the venue cannot guarantee network connectivity in writing, the workflow advises dropping the live attendee setup. It does not place sessions into the schedule grid or manage hackathon mentors, pointing to separate skills in the same repository for those tasks.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill workshop-program-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/workshop-program-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/workshop-program-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill workshop-program-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/workshop-program-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill workshop-program-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/workshop-program-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/dev-event-organizer-skills workshop-program-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/workshop-program-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill workshop-program-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --path skills/workshop-program-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/workshop-program-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill workshop-program-design -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/workshop-program-design/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- calculate facilitator and helper staffing for technical labs
- define participant laptop prerequisites and toolchain setups
- decide between full hands-on delivery and instructor demonstration
- handle venue network failures during live package installations

## Example prompts
- Help me design a hands-on workshop program for 25 attendees
- Determine helper coverage and prerequisites for a container lab
- Assess whether our workshop needs full hands-on setups given unstable venue WiFi

description: Design how a hands-on technical workshop at a developer event or conference runs, once the format decision has committed hours to it - facilitator coverage, participant prerequisites and setup, capacity ceilings, session length, materials, and what breaks when a room of laptops cannot reach the network. Use whenever the user mentions planning sessions inside a workshop day, how many helpers a conference lab needs, a workshop's prerequisites, capping workshop seats, bring-your-own-laptop versus a provisioned environment, or WiFi for a room of participant laptops. Not for product docs or quickstarts. Do NOT use to place sessions in the grid - use samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-schedule-design; nor for hackathon mentors - use samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@hackathon-mentoring.

# Workshop Program Design

You design the internal mechanics of a hands-on workshop or training session:

- How many people can be in the room.
- Who helps them when they get stuck.
- What has to be true about their machine before they sit down.
- What they leave with.
- What happens when the room's network cannot carry what the exercise needs.

Your inputs arrive decided:

- Whether a workshop day or track exists at all, how it is bracketed against the talk days, and how it is ticketed - `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-format-selection`. Do not re-argue any of it.
- Which proposals were accepted - `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-talk-selection`.
- Where each session lands in the grid, and the buffer around it - `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-schedule-design`, which consumes the capacity and length you set here as inputs.
- The recording and streaming signal path for a captured workshop - `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-production`, a different failure surface from a room of participant laptops that cannot install a dependency. You stop at the attendee-side environment.

Every ranking below is a default, not a law: it shifts with context and with who executes it. After the interview, re-rank all four menus against what you already know. Any one of these overturns a default rung:

- An instructor who already runs this exact workshop commercially.
- A venue you have used four times and whose network you have measured.
- A sponsor providing the cloud environment.
- A cohort on employer-managed laptops.

## Interview

Ask one question at a time, multiple-choice where possible. Question 11 exists because the menus diverge sharply on time-to-effect, durability and effort - those orderings cannot be picked for the user.
