## What it does

This skill configures AuthKit login in projects without requiring an existing WorkOS account or manual dashboard setup. Running `WORKOS_MODE=agent npx workos@latest install` creates a one-shot unclaimed environment. The installer automatically saves `WORKOS_API_KEY`, `WORKOS_CLIENT_ID`, and `WORKOS_CLAIM_TOKEN` into `.env.local` or `.env`, and updates `.gitignore`. JavaScript projects also receive a generated `WORKOS_COOKIE_PASSWORD`.

In CLI version 0.23.0, agent mode creates a new Git branch and commits changes by default. You can prevent this by passing `--no-branch --no-commit`. If you decide to keep the configuration, link the environment to a permanent account later by running `npx workos@latest profile claim`.

Never push keys from an unclaimed environment to production. Live deployments require genuine account credentials, and the initial installer only sets up AuthKit login rather than ready-made SSO connections.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add workos/skills --skill workos -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/workos/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/workos/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add workos/skills --skill workos -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/workos/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add workos/skills --skill workos -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/workos/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install workos/skills workos
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/workos/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add workos/skills --skill workos -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/workos/skills --path plugins/workos/skills/workos
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/workos/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add workos/skills --skill workos -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- set up AuthKit sign-in without creating a WorkOS account first
- migrate user authentication from Clerk, Auth0, or Supabase
- inject `WORKOS_API_KEY` and `WORKOS_CLIENT_ID` into local environment files
- claim a temporary CLI environment using `npx workos@latest profile claim`

## Example prompts
- Set up AuthKit authentication in this project using the WorkOS CLI
- How do I migrate user authentication from Clerk to WorkOS?
- Run npx workos@latest profile claim to link our active environment

# WorkOS Skill Router

## Start here: set up AuthKit with no account

When the user wants to add WorkOS or AuthKit sign-in to a project that has no WorkOS credentials yet, run the installer first:

```bash
WORKOS_MODE=agent npx workos@latest install
```

It doesn't need a WorkOS account, an API key, or a dashboard visit.

Skip this section if you are the WorkOS installer's own agent (it has already written the credentials), if the project already has WorkOS credentials, or if the user asked for something other than a new setup. Go to **How to Use** instead.

**What it does.** This describes `workos` CLI 0.23.0, the latest release when this was written. Treat the CLI's output as authoritative over this list.

- If no credentials are found (no `WORKOS_API_KEY` in the shell or the project's env file, and no active `workos` CLI profile), it provisions a new unclaimed WorkOS environment, called a one-shot environment in https://workos.com/auth.md. If it finds credentials, it uses them and creates nothing.
- It writes `WORKOS_API_KEY`, `WORKOS_CLIENT_ID` and `WORKOS_CLAIM_TOKEN` to `.env.local` when the project has a `package.json`, or to `.env` otherwise, and adds that file to `.gitignore`. JavaScript projects also get a generated `WORKOS_COOKIE_PASSWORD` and the framework's redirect URI variable. Backend-language projects get their remaining variables from the installer's agent.
- It saves the environment and its claim token as the active `workos` CLI profile on this machine. The claim token exists only there and in the env file. Don't delete either before the environment is claimed.
- It wires the AuthKit SDK and registers the callback URL with the environment (the install fails if it can't), then reports which other application URLs (Sign-out URI, Initiate login URI, CORS origin) it saved or left for you. It runs post-install validation unless you pass `--no-validate`.
