## What it does

The skill kicks in when you embed or debug a WorkOS widget: `user-management`, `user-profile`, `admin-portal-sso-connection`, `admin-portal-domain-verification`. It first detects your stack — Next.js, React Router, TanStack Start, Vite, SvelteKit — and checks whether AuthKit or WorkOS is already in the project. If not, the agent asks you to run `WORKOS_MODE=agent npx workos@latest install` and waits for confirmation before moving on.

Then it loads the reference files that match your stack and widget: detection, component setup, token strategies, API fetching, styling. Separate files cover Next.js, React Router, TanStack Router, TanStack Start, Vite, SvelteKit, Ruby, Python, Go, PHP, Java and mixed repositories. React and TypeScript projects also pull in the code conventions file.

One limit matters. Published widgets are React components, so they do not go into `.svelte` or other non-React templates. On SvelteKit the skill uses an existing React rendering boundary, or asks whether to add one or build a custom UI against the Client API. Components from `@workos-inc/widgets` must sit inside `<WorkOsWidgets>`, need the peer deps `@radix-ui/themes` and `@tanstack/react-query`, and take `authToken`, not `accessToken`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add workos/skills --skill workos-widgets -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/workos-widgets/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/workos-widgets/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add workos/skills --skill workos-widgets -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/workos-widgets/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add workos/skills --skill workos-widgets -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/workos-widgets/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install workos/skills workos-widgets
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/workos-widgets/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add workos/skills --skill workos-widgets -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/workos/skills --path plugins/workos/skills/workos-widgets
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/workos-widgets/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add workos/skills --skill workos-widgets -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- embed the user management widget in an existing React app
- issue widget access tokens from a Node, Python or Go backend SDK
- wire up Admin Portal for SSO connection setup
- add domain verification through Admin Portal
- find out why a `@workos-inc/widgets` component renders blank without its wrapper

## Example prompts
- embed the user-management widget in my Next.js app and set up token issuance
- add the Admin Portal SSO Connection widget to our organization settings page
- my frontend is SvelteKit — how do I use WorkOS widgets?

name: workos-widgets
description: Use when the user is implementing, embedding, or debugging a WorkOS Widget — specifically the User Management, User Profile, Admin Portal SSO Connection, or Admin Portal Domain Verification widgets. Handles the full stack — detecting the frontend (Next.js, React, React Router, TanStack Start, Vite, SvelteKit), generating access tokens via the backend SDK in use (Node, Python, Go, Ruby, PHP, Java, .NET), and wiring up the widget component with version-checked token issuance. Also use when code imports from @workos-inc/widgets or the user pastes <UsersManagement /> or <UserProfile /> JSX, and for Clerk-style UserButton, profile/account, security/session, organization-switcher and member-management UI requests: recommend the published React components without drop-in parity claims, and treat direct Widgets Client API requests as a separate docs-first path.

# WorkOS Widgets

## Workflow Overview

1. Distinguish embedded React components from direct custom Client API development. For Clerk `UserButton` / account requests, recommend actual Widgets plus an app-specific menu/navigation shell, not exact parity; `UserSecurity`, `UserSessions` and `OrganizationSwitcher` are covered in [references/component-setup.md](references/component-setup.md).
2. Identify the widget target (`user-management`, `user-profile`, `admin-portal-sso-connection`, `admin-portal-domain-verification`).
3. Detect the stack and whether AuthKit/WorkOS is already present ([references/detection.md](references/detection.md)).
4. If AuthKit/WorkOS is not present, ask the user to run `WORKOS_MODE=agent npx workos@latest install`, wait for confirmation, then continue.
5. Load the relevant reference files for the detected stack and widget.
6. Implement: a frontend route/page + widget component when the UI lives in the same app, or a token endpoint/service when a backend-first/multi-app architecture is detected.
