# working-with-skills

Teaches an agent how to pick and use the PostHog skill-* MCP tools without burning context. Useful once your skill library grows and bodies get long.

## What it does

The skill covers tool selection and scaling. Progressive disclosure comes first: `skill-list` gives names and descriptions, `skill-get` gives the body plus a file manifest, `skill-file-get` returns a single file when you ask for it. Pulling bundled files ahead of time is wasted context for whatever you are actually doing.

A decision tree maps each job to one call: discovery, reading, creating, editing the body, editing a bundled file, renaming, duplicating, archiving. For edits it recommends the narrowest primitive available, so a targeted `edits` or `file_edits` beats replacing the whole body or the whole bundle. Every write needs a recent `version` from `skill-get` or from the previous write response, passed as `base_version`. Skip that and concurrent overwrites go unnoticed.

Authoring follows the Agent Skills spec: kebab-case `name`, trigger-rich description, short body, bulky material moved out into files. The layout convention is `scripts/` for code, `references/` for prose and examples, `assets/` for templates and data. `allowed_tools` is a request rather than a grant — a harness reading the skill from a file treats the list as pre-approved, while one loading it over MCP ignores the list until the user approves. Listing tools the skill never calls only widens that request.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill working-with-skills -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/working-with-skills/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/working-with-skills/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill working-with-skills -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/working-with-skills/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill working-with-skills -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/working-with-skills/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PostHog/skills working-with-skills
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/working-with-skills/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill working-with-skills -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PostHog/skills --path skills/omnibus/working-with-skills
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/working-with-skills/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill working-with-skills -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PostHog/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/omnibus/working-with-skills/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find the right skill from descriptions alone, without fetching every candidate body
- read a large skill while pulling only the files the current task needs
- change one paragraph in a body instead of rewriting the whole skill
- create a skill with its files in one call, avoiding extra versions
- diagnose a rejected write caused by a stale version

## Example prompts
- Find a skill about fractals with `skill-list` and show me the descriptions only
- Run `skill-get` on `working-with-skills` and tell me which files the body edit needs
- Edit one paragraph in `my-skill` using `edits`, with the version from the last `skill-get`

  Best practices for agents managing PostHog skills via the MCP `skill-*` tools —
  how to discover, read, create, update, and refactor skills efficiently, especially
  large skills with many bundled files. Use whenever you are about to call any
  `skill-*` tool, asked to author or edit a shared skill, or troubleshoot
  why a skill write was rejected. Also use when asked what skills are good for
  or how to shape one (project hub, runbook, catalog, handover, daily driver).
  Pairs with `skills-store` (which covers the raw tool surface) by adding the
  decision-tree, efficiency, pattern, and pitfall guidance.

# Working with PostHog skills

This skill teaches agents how to use the `skill-*` MCP tools well — minimum
context, minimum round-trips, minimum mistakes. If you are not yet familiar with
the tool surface itself, read the `skills-store` skill first for the catalog.
This document is about _how to choose between the tools_ and _how to scale the
workflow_ when skills get big.

## Operating principles

1. **Progressive disclosure is non-negotiable.** Lists return descriptions, get
   returns body + manifest, file-get returns one file. Never preload bundled
   files "just in case" — every preloaded script is wasted context for the
   actual task.
2. **Pick the smallest write primitive that does the job.** A targeted `edits`
   or `file_edits` is cheaper, safer, and clearer in version history than a
   full body or full bundle replacement.
3. **Reads are cheap; concurrent overwrites are not.** Always have a recent
   `version` from `skill-get` (or from the response of the previous write)
   before calling any write tool, and pass it as `base_version`.
4. **Authoring follows the [Agent Skills spec](https://agentskills.io/specification).**
   Keep `name` kebab-case, descriptions trigger-rich, body short, bulky
   material in bundled files.

## Decision tree: which tool do I call?

```text
Need to know what's available?
  └─► skill-list                    (names + descriptions only)
Need to use / inspect a specific skill?
  └─► skill-get                     (body + file manifest, NO file contents)
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE 5304bd7f65cf51eb

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 5304bd7f65cf51eb tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
