## What it does

The skill lays out a three-layer model: sanitize on input, validate for logic, escape on output. The first layer cleans data with `sanitize_*`, the second checks business rules, the third encodes special characters with `esc_*`. The point is to shut down XSS, CSRF and SQL injection.

A separate section covers nonces. Three patterns are shown: form fields via `wp_nonce_field`, links via `wp_nonce_url`, and AJAX where the nonce is passed to JavaScript through `wp_localize_script`. Each vulnerable snippet sits next to a safe version with a `current_user_can` capability check.

The skill targets WordPress 6.7+ and PHP 8.3+. It assumes intermediate to advanced familiarity, so if you have never touched WordPress hooks or its API, expect a rough start. It also references a `php-quality-antipatterns.md` file, which is not part of the skill itself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill wordpress-security-validation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/wordpress-security-validation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/wordpress-security-validation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill wordpress-security-validation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/wordpress-security-validation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill wordpress-security-validation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/wordpress-security-validation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills wordpress-security-validation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/wordpress-security-validation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill wordpress-security-validation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/php/frameworks/wordpress/wordpress-security-validation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/wordpress-security-validation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill wordpress-security-validation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/toolchains/php/frameworks/wordpress/wordpress-security-validation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- stop a form from being forged via a nonce check
- clean `$_POST` data before writing it to the database
- verify user capabilities before deleting a post
- escape user text when rendering it in a template
- protect an AJAX handler from outside requests

## Example prompts
- check my form handler for CSRF and add wp_verify_nonce
- show me how to escape a meta field in a theme template
- rewrite this AJAX request with a nonce and a capability check

# WordPress Security & Data Validation

**Version:** 1.1.0
**Target:** WordPress 6.7+ | PHP 8.3+
**Skill Level:** Intermediate to Advanced

## Overview

Security is not optional in WordPress development—it's fundamental. This skill teaches the **three-layer security model** that prevents XSS, CSRF, SQL injection, and other common web vulnerabilities through proper input sanitization, business logic validation, and output escaping.

**The Golden Rule:** "Sanitize on input, validate for logic, escape on output."

### Why This Matters

Every year, thousands of WordPress sites are compromised due to security vulnerabilities in plugins and themes. Most of these attacks exploit one of three weaknesses:

1. **XSS (Cross-Site Scripting):** Malicious JavaScript injected through unsanitized output
2. **CSRF (Cross-Site Request Forgery):** Unauthorized actions performed on behalf of authenticated users
3. **SQL Injection:** Database manipulation through unsanitized database queries

This skill provides **complete, production-ready patterns** for preventing all three attack vectors.

---

## The Three-Layer Security Model

WordPress security follows a defense-in-depth strategy with three distinct layers:

```
User Input → [1. SANITIZE] → [2. VALIDATE] → Process → [3. ESCAPE] → Output
```

### Layer 1: Sanitization (Input Cleaning)
**Purpose:** Remove dangerous characters and normalize data format
**When:** Immediately upon receiving user input
**Example:** `sanitize_text_field($_POST['username'])`

### Layer 2: Validation (Logic Checks)
**Purpose:** Ensure data meets business requirements
**When:** After sanitization, before processing
