## What it does

The skill activates while you write plugin or theme code and want the agent to follow the right WordPress patterns. It covers registering custom REST routes under a namespace like `myplugin/v1`, argument validation and sanitization callbacks, permission checks in `permission_callback`, and full CRUD built on `WP_Query` with pagination. Responses go through `rest_ensure_response` and get HATEOAS `self`, `prev` and `next` links attached.

The second half is automation and performance: WP-CLI commands plus caching with transients and the object cache. That matters once queries start slowing down page output. The skill ships as `user-invocable: false` and `disable-model-invocation: true`, so it is pulled in by task context rather than typed by hand.

One catch: this is WordPress on PHP, and the automation commands need WP-CLI installed. On a different stack there is nothing here for you.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill wordpress-advanced-architecture -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/wordpress-advanced-architecture/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/wordpress-advanced-architecture/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill wordpress-advanced-architecture -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/wordpress-advanced-architecture/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill wordpress-advanced-architecture -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/wordpress-advanced-architecture/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills wordpress-advanced-architecture
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/wordpress-advanced-architecture/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill wordpress-advanced-architecture -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/php/frameworks/wordpress/wordpress-advanced-architecture
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/wordpress-advanced-architecture/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill wordpress-advanced-architecture -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- register a custom REST route with permission checks
- build a paginated CRUD endpoint with next-page links
- write a WP-CLI command for a repetitive task
- cache expensive queries with transients
- add validation and sanitization to request arguments

## Example prompts
- register a REST route myplugin/v1/books with pagination and a permission_callback
- build CRUD for the book post type over the REST API
- cache the book list with transients

# Advanced WordPress Architecture

Master advanced WordPress development patterns including REST API endpoints, WP-CLI commands, performance optimization, and caching strategies for scalable WordPress applications.

## 1. REST API Development

The WordPress REST API provides a powerful interface for creating custom endpoints with proper authentication, validation, and response formatting.

### Endpoint Registration with Namespacing

```php
add_action( 'rest_api_init', 'register_custom_rest_routes' );
function register_custom_rest_routes() {
    // Namespace: myplugin/v1 (enables versioning)
    $namespace = 'myplugin/v1';
    // GET /wp-json/myplugin/v1/books
    register_rest_route( $namespace, '/books', [
        'methods'  => 'GET',
        'callback' => 'get_books_callback',
        'permission_callback' => '__return_true', // Public endpoint
        'args' => [
            'per_page' => [
                'default' => 10,
                'validate_callback' => function( $param ) {
                    return is_numeric( $param ) && $param > 0 && $param <= 100;
                },
                'sanitize_callback' => 'absint',
            ],
            'page' => [
                'default' => 1,
                'validate_callback' => function( $param ) {
                    return is_numeric( $param ) && $param > 0;
                },
                'sanitize_callback' => 'absint',
            ],
        ],
    ]);
    // GET /wp-json/myplugin/v1/books/(?P<id>\d+)
    register_rest_route( $namespace, '/books/(?P<id>\d+)', [
        'methods'  => 'GET',
        'callback' => 'get_book_callback',
        'permission_callback' => '__return_true',
        'args' => [
            'id' => [
